2024 Road Map[edit]

2023 was an amazing year for Sarna in terms of how much we have grown as a wiki. Over 10,000 new articles, half dozen new regular editors and a few structural updates. The one downside about this however exponential growth however is it also caused a few minor issues where things where evolving faster than everybody could keep up.

This year I have decided to try something new and publish a road map for 2024. Obviously this will not be an exhaustive list of projects and updates planned, but it will serve to inform people of the broad picture over the year.

Improvements to the wiki[edit]

  • Article format
    • Over the last year or so we have been updating some of the infoboxes (the boxes in articles that contain things like characters date of birth or a planets gravity). Most of the newer ones you will of noticed now feature a colored border, This is something we are calling the "soft divide". The idea is that different colors will be used to indicate different "article groups". What this means is that a character article might be green as well as the article about his house, a planet could be yellow, whilst a real world author and the novel they wrote both get blue infobox. Over time users will learn what the colors mean and will automatically know what type of article they are looking at.
    • Update all planet infoboxes (Template:InfoBoxPlanetStandard to Template:InfoBoxPlanet).
  • Navigation
    • Over the past year, the number of disambiguation pages has nearly tripled. These pages help users find similarly named pages more easily by listing them all together, supplementing the wiki’s search function. Instead of having to scour and examine the search pages for articles that can sometimes be obscure, users should now be able to find and access content more quickly. The addition of thousands of characters to the wiki database over the past few months, especially Clan warriors with single names, highlighted the need to expand and facilitate accessibility. This process has also helped to standardize naming conventions and other structural formats, which hopefully leads to easier and easier navigation as users become more familiar with the wiki
    • Develop "Five Pillars" category structure based on the concept of top level categories being:
    • Develop a primary category tree map based on subjects so people can navigate the wiki using categories.
    • Develop a secondary category tree map based on factions.
    • Reorganise 'Mech categories. Category:BattleMechs is currently the "top level" category dealing with 'Mechs, but a BattleMech is a distinct technology.
  • Maps
    • Re-write and expansion of the map script. Focusing on makeing it more usable for everyone, plus there are a bunch of visual improvements.
    • Star class and recharge time data from the various maps released with Tamar Rising, Empire Alone & Dominions Divided.

Sarna Community[edit]

  • 2024 sarna road map
    • Yes I am cheating by making this road map the first item on the list, but I intend to make it an annual thing if it works, so I think it counts!
  • Rebirth of the Founder's Awards
    • Way back in 2009 Sarna started an annual awards program to show appreciation for editors hard work. Over time people drifted away leaving us with a tiny editing staff, in 2019 it felt a little self congratulatory so we stopped. Now with the BattleTech Renaissance well underway we have what is possibly the largest editing team in our history, so I feel it is only right to bring back the awards. Nominations will be open soon!
  • Update Help:Contents for updated "article types", and create type specific mini-MoS.
  • Create "how to" for SUCKIT.

Project House[edit]

Major Project house is an ongoing project to catalog the noble houses of the Inner Sphere as best I can. BattleTech is space feudalism but we do not actually see a lot of it going on beyond the five main houses. I am interested in the various Dukes, Counts and Barons.
