The Vandalia Monitor (Monitorens naturan) was a species of lizard native to Vandalia. Dependent on the pre-terraforming desert environment of its homeworld, the monitor nearly went extinct after colonization was launched in 2619.[1]
Scientific interest kept the lizard alive. Pre-colonization study had shown that its blood resembled synthetic antipsychotic drugs. In 2639, further study suggested that a chemical derived from the lizard's blood could completely prevent violent impulses without notable side effects. Attempts to synthesize the chemical without the lizard failed, and ComStar scientists, fearing the monitor's nearing extinction, extracted several lizards offworld.[1]
By 3024, a limited number of lizards remained in captivity on a ComStar world a hundred parsecs rimward of the Lyran Commonwealth. They bred slowly in captivity, and attempts to introduce them to other worlds had failed to predators. ComStar's Project Monitor continued to ask Inner Sphere and Periphery powers to let them conduct breeding experiments on desert worlds; they were consistently declined, though Kyalla Centrella suggested that the Magistracy of Canopus might be ready for it by 3075.[1]
