The Waldorff system was home to at least one habitable world, Waldorff II, and as of June 3152 was located in the Alyina Mercantile League.[2]

System Description[edit]

The Waldorff system is located near the Alyina and Butler systems[3][4] and consists of a class G0V primary orbited by at least two planets. During the twenty-eighth century recharge stations were in place at both the nadir and zenith jump points.[1]

System History[edit]

The Waldorff system was settled before or during the Age of War and was a member of the Lyran Commonwealth by the end of that era.[5]

Waldorff II - more commonly known simply as Waldorff - is the second planet in the system and has a single moon named Nikola.[1]

Waldorff V[edit]

The swamps of Waldorf V saw the first live-fire testing of the Infiltrator Mk. I suit during a raid by the First Somerset Strikers. A surprise counterattack by the Falcon's Claws proved the usefulness of the Inner Sphere's first battle armor in centuries, along with its limitations.[39]

Waldorff VII[edit]

The seventh planet of the system had at least one small moon, which itself was home to an abandoned refinery.[40] The moon's name was not mentioned. In the available sources, the moon and the mining operation there are casually referred to as "Waldorff VII", suggesting the otherwise unnamed moon to be the only interesting or relevant aspect of the planet.

An unusual feature of this moon was that it possessed vast, interconnected reservoirs of a high-quality hydrocarbon fuel that had its own oxidizer bound into it. The deposits were hidden under a kilometer-thick layer of non-porous rock, with solid granite below the fuel. Vickers Mining had set up an extraction plant on the moon by 3022 and planned to export the fuel to Waldorff II with minimal costs where it was estimated the local industry would "kill" for such a kind of super-fuel and convert at least half of all planetary transportation to make use of it within ten years, with the reserves on the moon of Waldorf VII expected to last for at least 100 years even in such a scenario. But CEO Barbara Edwards had a feeling that her staff was misrepresenting the facts of this supposed gold mine to her and sought a second opinion from Victoria Jones of Jones Consulting. In a report dated 10/05/3022, Jones advised Edwards that the volatile fuel would explode if heated too much (800 degrees on an unspecified scale are mentioned), and the multiple bore holes through the rock layer created by the extraction facility should be thought of as fuses where one errant spark might cause an extensive explosion that would destroy the facility if not the entire moon and undoubtedly cost lives. Jones described the moon as massive financial and moral disaster waiting to happen and a time bomb waiting to go off, strongly suggesting to shut the facility down immediately in her report's summary. The report somehow found its way into the MIIO archives.[40]

The First Somerset Strikers supposedly fought a Trial against elements of Clan Jade Falcon on the moon of Waldorff VII in ca. 3050, resulting in a stray missile setting off a chain reaction that apparently tore the moon apart. It is unknown if this was a real event or just a dramatized tale for the purpose of the Somerset Strikers propaganda holovid.

Planetary History[edit]

Clan Invasion[edit]

Waldorff was conquered by Clan Jade Falcon during the Third Wave of Operation REVIVAL in June 3050. Defending the planet against the invading Second Falcon Jaegers was the planet's only armed force, the Waldorff City Police Department. Despite consisting of only one company of infantry, two armored cars and an UrbanMech, the police gave a good showing of themselves: four Elementals were killed and an OmniMech was crippled during the fighting due to the police's intimate knowledge of the city, which allowed them to lead the Clan invaders into prepared ambushes before escaping through the city's sewer and storm drainage system. Their heroic efforts were all for naught though, and in the end most of the police were killed or captured and the central precinct house destroyed by the Jade Falcons.[22]

In November 3051, the planet was transferred from the Jade Falcons to the Steel Vipers, after a decision by ilKhan Ulric Kerensky himself. No fighting occurred between the two Clans during this move, and the Triasch Keshik took command of the planet.[41]

Sometime after this, a company of Twenty-third Arcturan Guards ’Mechs launched a harassment raid on Waldorff. While the raiders were away from their transport, a lone Ninth Fang Devil piloted by MechWarrior Fargo found the Guards' Union-class DropShip while on a long-range patrol. After dispatching the two light tank sentries, he destroyed one of the landing struts, causing the Dropship to crash before it could take off to safety. When the Guards company returned, they immediately surrendered to the Trinary of OmniMechs waiting for them.[42]

Waldorff served as the capital of Clan Steel Viper's occupation zone until 3061. In that year the final battle of the Hegira War between the Jade Falcons and Steel Vipers took place on this planet, with the Vipers defeated and leaving the Inner Sphere entirely.[43]

ilClan Era[edit]

Following the collapse of Clan Jade Falcon's Occupation Zone into anarchy after the Battle of Terra, Waldorff accepted the suzerainty of Merchant Factor Marena's nascent realm. The Alyina Mercantile League decided to continue operating the genetic repository that had been established on Waldorff during the REVIVAL years.[44]
