Yesterday's Enemy is a short story by Lance Scarinci that was published in the first issue of Shrapnel.

Plot Summary[edit]

Jason Youngblood, commander of the Crescent Hawks, finds himself in the middle of the Battle of Luthien. As part of the Kell Hounds, he takes part in the defense against the Clans. He thinks about the irony of defending Luthien, capital of the Draconis Combine, when his unit previously always fought against House Kurita. After making a short fly to oversee the situation, he lands, but directly has to take off again in order to get rid of an Elemental.

This is when Morgan Kell orders him to lead the Crescent Hawks into the city and defend it against Clan Nova Cat forces, that have breached the Kuritan lines. After a short flight, he lands in the middle of a battle, recognizing Takashi Kurita's 'Mech, and is surprised when the Coordinator bows to him, a gesture Youngblood returns in kind.

Fifteen days later on Arc-Royal, Youngblood talks with Morgan Kell. He is devastated because his Phoenix Hawk LAM has been so badly damaged, that it will never fly again due to replacement parts not being available anymore. As a compensation Kell provides him with a brand-new Phoenix Hawk. Kell then attempts to convince Youngblood to remain with the Kell Hounds. He thinks about it and agrees, but asked to step back from active duty for a while, to have more time with his son.
