Planetary History[edit]

Though Zaniah has some light commercial industry and is known for its exported civilian vehicles, it is best known for the MechWarrior sanctuary named St. Marinus House, which is located deep in one of its deserts. MechWarriors retire to this facility after seeing too much of war. Out of respect for the residents, the local population never tells outsiders where the sanctuary is and it is not shown on any maps.[1]

The world itself has four seas that have been extensively expanded into the interior of the continents via irrigation projects. This water is then purified and used in agriculture, for drinking, and other needs. Although this provides for most of the inhabitant's water needs, the world does still import some fresh water. Raids that occur on the world focus on Starboro (the largest city) and Hartzborg (the primary spaceport).[1]

Third Succession War[edit]

In 3025, Zaniah came under attack from Free Worlds League forces, prompting the Commonwealth to deploy the mercenary unit Snord's Irregulars to the planet. During their tour on Zaniah the Irregulars found a destroyed Lyran Commonwealth Armed Forces Archer in crimson colors, with the pilot alive and still inside the 'Mech. The Irregulars rescued the pilot, who was wearing the uniform of a leutnant, and brought him back to their home base on Clinton for treatment; all that the pilot could remember was that his first name was Marcos, and that he was a MechWarrior. Notable for his striking resemblance to Thomas Marik, Marcos went on to join the Irregulars under the name Marcos Shake after comprehensive searches of various military databases failed to reveal his identity.[28]

Fourth Succession War[edit]

In October 3028, the Lyran Commonwealth Armed Forces repositioned a number of frontline units as the Free Worlds League Military launched Operation DAGGER. One of the units repositioned were the Thirty-second Lyran Guards, who were relocated to Zaniah from Solaris; the LCAF strategic intent wasn't to prevent a League invasion, but rather to make invading forces pay more dearly for any gains and slow the progress of any breakthrough.[54]

Jihad[edit]

During the Jihad, the Word of Blake added Zaniah to their Protectorate, but the planetary government surrendered peacefully to the Lyran Front allied coalition forces on 25 December 3077.[44]

Dark Age[edit]

The homeworld of Republic Paladin Ariana Zou, Zaniah's St. Marinus monastery inspired a lifelong fascination that drove her to enlist in the Republic Armed Forces.[55]

During Clan Wolf's invasion of the Lyran Commonwealth, Zaniah was one of three worlds invaded by Clan Wolf forces under saKhan Garner Kerensky in early 3143, as part of a thrust intended to isolate Solaris VII and avoid the heavily defended Hesperus II.[56]

Military Deployment[edit]

Geography[edit]

Zaniah is mostly land with its surface water mostly divided among four seas: Beowulf and Lambard in the northern hemisphere, and Vaclav and Wendell in the southern.[1]
