History
Star League Era
The Thirteenth Avalon Hussars was one of the more specialized regiments within the Avalon Hussars during the Star League era. Unusually for a primarily BattleMech formation, the Thirteenth specialized in underwater combat, and many of the troops of the Thirteenth had gone so far as to field-modify their rides to mount more energy weapons as a consequence.[2]
First Succession War
When the First Succession War erupted, the Thirteenth were stationed on Xhosa VII. The Thirteenth were subsequently destroyed during the War, one of seven Avalon Hussars regiments to be wiped out during the thirty-five year conflict.[1] The former commanding officer of the Thirteenth, Marshal E. Dryer, had suspected that the DCMS was building up forces for a major action, and had been vocally warning everyone that the Combine was poised for an attack. His efforts to convince others became so vocal and so strident that he was subject to court martial and demoted three ranks, to Colonel, for assaulting a Field Marshal who disagreed with him. Colonel Dryer was one of the first killed in action when the Combine invasion he'd predicted began.[3]

Tactics
During the Star League era all of the Avalon Hussars were required to focus on being both flexible and mobile, with every regiment required to be capable of deploying within eight hours, although many of the Hussars struggled to actually achieve this.[2]
