The First Cossack Lancers (FCL) was an elite militia unit under the direct command of the planetary governor of Mirach.[1]

History[edit]

Under Republic rule, Mirach was guarded by two separate militias: the First Cossack Lancers under the command of the planetary governor, and the Mirach Home Guard under the planetary legate.[2] The First Cossack Lancers were granted as a reward for Governor Sergio Ortega's service under Devlin Stone.[3]

Sometime in 3132, the Lancers fought copper miners on Mirach.[2] As well, on 22 November 3132, raiders attacked Mirach.[4] The raiders struck at a number of industrial sites located on the Ventrale continent, but were easily defeated by the First Cossack Lancers, particularly after a series of unfortunate accidents befell the raiders. Although the identity of the raiders was never proven, the general sentiment among the population was that they had been hired or employed by Jacob Bannson, who had taken an interest in the planet.[1][2]

In early 3133, in the wake of the Blackout, Mirach faced a crisis. Minister of Information Elora Rimonova, in close association with Legate Calvilena Tortorelli, plotted and agitated against the government.[5] On 16 April, Governor Sergio Ortega placed the First Cossack Lancers under the legate's command, merging them into the legate's Mirach Home Guard.[6] After one final training exercise, in which planetary heir Dale Ortega was assassinated on Elora's command,[7] the Lancers were scattered throughout the Home Guard. In secret, they served as agents of the governor. FCL CO Manfred Leclerc in particular served as a spy within the Home Guard, as well as a liaison with the Mirach Business Association, an armed faction on the planet. He trained pilots for the Business Association's fleet of militarized IndustrialMechs while observing its activities.[8] Other FCL soldiers advocated for Governor Ortega within their new unit.[9]

Under Elora's influence, Legate Tortorelli launched a military coup on 3 May.[10] For a short few days, Tortorelli's Home Guard fought loyal remnants of the scattered Lancers, the Mirach Business Association's militarized IndustrialMechs, and its own defectors. Loyalty to the Governor won out. The coup collapsed by 12 May, the Home Guard's weak loyalty to Tortorelli undermined by Ortega-loyal Lancers scattered throughout and their force met with a strong defense.[11] In the aftermath, Governor Ortega reconstituted the First Cossack Lancers, now granted the Mirach Business Association's armed IndustrialMechs.[9]

3133[edit]

The First Cossack Lancers lacked any BattleMechs due to Governor Ortega's pacifistic policies. They had battle armor and combat vehicles at their disposal.[3] After the 3133 coup attempt, several armed IndustrialMechs, once under Mirach Business Association control, were handed to the reconstituted Lancers.[9]
