Unit Descriptiion

The 1st Regulan Hussars was a Free Worlds League provincial BattleMech regiment that is first formed as part of the Principality of Regulus militia forces. The unit in its time was considered to colorful and the best of the Regulan armed forces had to offer.

History

Early History

The unit was first organized in 2478, at the dawn modern BattleMech came enter the fields. The Principality of Regulus was one of the wealthy and highly independent of Free Worlds League's provinces. The regiment was assign at its initial formation with Archers and Wasps which were produced at then league held world of Cameron.

The unit first saw action on Lopez in 2485 where it faced Heavy Tank Regiment from House Liao. This first battle also marked the unit's first defeat. The unit's inexperience and lack of training became apparent. This was due in part of their early 'Mech designs had technical maintenance issues that kept regiment going to training fields. Initially use of BattleMechs was criticized by military establishment. However, the unit manage to over come its early shortcomings and out live Principality ruling family, House Selaj.[1]

The Early Andurien Wars & Reunification War

The Hussars saw significant action during the Second Andurien War that raged from 2528 to 2531. The Hussars were known for being able to out-maneuver and defeat opponents they faced during the conflict. Captain-General Albert Marik had to spread out his troops to cover large battlefronts. These troop deployments were stretch thin, during the conflict. Despite three to one odds against them, the 1st Regulan Hussars were able defeat their Liao opponents. The unit fought again with elderly Captain-General in the Third Andurien War in 2551, which was stopped short by Ian Cameron brokered second treaty between Liao and House Marik. Which swept them into deals with House Cameron to form the Star League.[2]

However, Star League was not complete. The 1st Regulan Hussars were called duty again, along with its newly formed sister units 2nd and 3rd Regulan Hussars. They were deployed with Marik Armada to conquer Magistracy of Canopus for the Star League in 2577. The 1st Regulans were noted for their exploits during the conflict. Their most of its notable actions of the war was the sacking of Canopus IV, periphery nation's capital. This brutal conflicted was success, but at price of 60 percent of its numbers were destroyed in the fighting.[3]

House Selaj Conflict

In 2620, the Principality of Regulus along with rest of the League was thrown into economic turmoil. Regulus's trade-practices came under scrutiny as it was being cause of the economic problems. Rift between the League government and Regulus grew, as economic & political problems grew worse with acts of terrorism become more common place through out the League. Then in 2667, terrorist explosion tour the ruling Marik's family home apart, nearly wiping out entirely accept for Gerald Marik. It was learned that the terrorist group, Scourge of Death was responsible for these acts and Principality’s ruling family behind them.

Gerald Marik and League government conducted a military tribunal which found all three members of House Selaj guilty and sentenced to death in absence. Finding out of his family's death sentenced, Prince Rajneesh Selaj placed the entire Principality’s armed forces on alert. Prince Selaj visited Regulan Hussars convincing them of his innocence shortly before the Captain-General forces invaded province in December 2679. On Helios Minor, Captain-General forces consisted of six Marik Militia Regiments. The 1st Hussars and its other member units fought to keep D'mir Selaj's home world from falling. However, the Hussar was driven back after month of fighting. Shortly after the Selaj family head fled to Magistracy of Canopus and Principality fell.

The Hussars were only purged of its ranks of disloyalty to the League, lucking out that Captain-General felt the unit was too valuable to disbanded. It won't be a year later until the unit was allowed to return to garrison principality again.[4]

Civil War of 2729 & Regency Era of the Star League

In 2729, Hussars were caught up in Marik Civil War between Captain-General Elise Marik and her brother Oliver. The Hussars were loyal to the Captain-General and involved the heavy fight. The 1st Regulans were dispatched to Ariel, where fought rebel forces in fierce desert conflict. The unit was devastated by the conflict, would not be until 2734 when unit would become operational again. The remaining Hussars unit were victorious over the rebels but were too devastated by the conflict.

Captain-General Elise rewarded Hussar's battalion and regimential commanders with Knighthood. The Hussars were granted 10,000 acres on Avior, which became their new base of operations. The Principality’s new ruling families, Cameron-Jones, were close allies with Marik family and unit's loyalty to league grew strong.

After the death of the First Lord, General Aleksandr Kerensky was named regent of Star League. During this period he allowed House Lords to expand its private armies, which allow Hussar's ranks. The 1st Regulans did not see action in Amaris Coup that followed periphery rebellion of high taxes.

Succession Wars

The unit did not see action until 2787, when First Succession War broke out. The unit had raided House Steiner worlds of old Federation of Skye. In series of raids that lead to assault of Summer. There the unit inflicted heavy damage to those worlds manufacturing complexes, including JumpShip component factory. At same time, Captain-General Kenyon Marik ordered invasion of the Capellan Confederation.

In 2806 the 1st Regulans with the 5th Regulans were transferred to Capellan Frontier where they assigned to Oriente. The Liao forces had attempted twice in past to invade the province capital world. During the third invasion of Oriente, 1st Regulans were credit in destruction of one Confederation elite units, 41st Capellan Heavy Assault Battalion.

After serving time on the Capellan Frontier, the 1s Regulans, still teamed with the 5th were transferred to the Lyran front of the war. There they were assigned to invade Lyran world of Bella. The units used clever strategic trickery to fool the 12th and 14th Lyran Regulars that they facing large invasion force and drove them off the planet. By the time ruse was seen through, Hussars had received reinforcements to secure the planet. The unit remained on Bella until political problems back in the Principality compelled the unit commanders to evoke their right as province military return help remedy the problem. The problems at home caused the 1st Regulans sat out the remainder of the 1st Succession War.[5]

Later Succession Wars

At start of the Third Succession War in 2866, the First Regulans participated with other Hussars in series of devastating assaults into Lyran Commonwealth. The entire Regulan Hussar Brigade struck the old Federation Skye worlds of Arcadia, Clinton, Lamon, Mariefred, and New Kyoto.

Later the unit enjoyed return to the Liao frontier, where they participated in raids into Liao space to exercise their long-time vendetta with the Liaos. The unit's compliment of heavy 'Mechs were put to good use during this time, but unit begun to loss too many 'Mechs during their vendetta. The unit was returned to Principality for rest and recovery.

The unit then participated in a sweep of Liao's Sarna Commonality. There it and other Regulan units raids worlds such as Berenson, Kyrkbacken, and Zion. During the campaign, 1st Regulans's urge for revenge against Liaos grew stronger. This was caused when the 3rd Regulan Hussars, were ambushed by Northwind Highlanders on Nanking and were destroyed.

The 1st Regulans invaded world of Wing in 2924. The unit encountered Eridani Light Horse's 50th Heavy Cavalry and engaged in a tough two-week campaign. The Eridanis gave Regulans good fight, but 1st Regulans managed push 50th to withdraw from the planet.

Ties with Marik family became strained after then ,Captain-General Stephen Marik, left its sister unit the 6th Regulan Hussars to wither and die fighting on Loric. The two year campaign which ended unit sister unit destruction in 2973, 250 year bond it had with Marik family.

In 3006 the 1st Regulans and its other sister units participated in the invasion of Lyran Commonwealth. The damaging campaign was aided by Lyran Archon Alessandro Steiner's concentrated weaken policy. The 1st Regulans was caused considerable damaged when it raided Ford and Cavanaugh II. However, ties had turn on Marik forces invading when Alessandro was ousted by Katrina Steiner. She organized counter-assault with several mercenary regiments which caused heavily damaged 1st Regulans and its other sister units. So badly mauled, after returning to Marik space the decimated 8th Regulus Hussars were disbanded to rebuild 1st and the rest.[6]

Marik Civil War of 3014

The Regulans returned home and remained in the principality recuperating for several years.

In 3014, Anton Marik declared himself new Captain-General putting himself against sitting Captain-General and brother Janos Marik. The 1st Regulans along with the 2nd Regulans declared for Janos. However, the 4th and 5th Regulan Hussars declared for Anton, making them rebel enemies. The 1st Regulans were assaulted by the Wolf's Dragoons, taking 40 percent damage before withdrawing. By February 3015, entire Free Worlds League might was put into campaign to demolish the rebels. The campaign pushed the rebels into cluster worlds center around Ling. During these last battles, 1st Regulans with its fellow loyalist sister unit, encounter the 5th Regulans on McKenna. Both units were bitter over betrayal of their now former comrades, mauled the 5th. The 5th Regulans managed to flee the planet after being reduced 40 percent of its fight strength.

After the Civil War ended, Captain-General Janos Marik rewarded the 1st & 2nd Regulans with bounty of cash and spare parts at the expense of the 4th and 5th Regulans. These gifts created large rift between former loyalist and rebel regiments.[7]

Andurien Secession

After Parliament passed the Military Reorganization Act, many of the provincial forces of the Free Worlds League saw their traditions and unique identities subsumed by the FWLM's desire to standardize their units. Though this rankled the First Regulan Hussars, they didn't refuse any order handed down by the LCCC. Instead they adopted them slowly. So slowly in fact that one investigator described the rate of adoption as "glacial". Despite this, the First Regulan Hussars maintained their combat readiness during the transition.[8]

Operation Bull Dog

The unit participated in Operation Bulldog in 3059 and liberated the world of Hyner from Clan Smoke Jaguar control under the banner of the SLDF. The unit managed to salvage a great deal of Clan technology and equipment. They subsequently traded much of the salvage to Free World League manufactures in exchange for equipment that would be more easily maintained. As of 3067, the unit was one of the best regiments in the FWLM.

Jihad

During the Jihad, the 1st Regulan Hussars were utterly destroyed while defending capital of Regulus in June 3072. Regulus City was assaulted by Word of Blake's 49th Shadow Division while carrying out an extraction of their commander from her mission.[9]

By 3077 the unit was rebuilding, with Colonel Lord Ihsan Hunter as it commanding officer. The unit, along with the 2nd and 4th Regulans had received most replacement equipment of the twelve Regulan Hussar regiments. Among its rebuilt ranks, they were assigned lances of Star League era 3C Trebuchets. Regulan High Command General Thomas Orfelt also has order the reactivation of the 1st Regulan's iconic Rolling Thunder company, throwing a considerable amount of resources to rebuild it and the Regulans shattered public imagine.[10]

In September 3077 the newly reformed First Regulan Hussars landed on the contested world of Vosloorus. There they inflicted serious losses on the defending 5th Marik Militia. They also allowed members of the Fifth who wanted to join regional militaries to do so.[11]

Dark Age

War for Atreus

As of June 30th, 3138, the 1st Hussars were stationed on Regulus. [12] A month later, the Hussars were part of the force that took the former capital world of Atreus in the name of Regulan Fiefs. The unit was then spread out to protect vital industrial sites.

From April 21st to the 27th of 3139, forces participating in Operation Homecoming invaded Atreus. The 1st fought a bitter fight against them, and were ultimately defeated. It is unknown if the 1st Regulans survived the invasion.

  • As of 3139 the commanding officer was Colonel Petrovski.

Tactics

The First Regulan Hussars have one of the most complete command organizations in the FWLM. Every trooper knows his part in the plan and how it affects his fellow soldiers. This allows the First Regulan to respond to battlefield changes very quickly.[8]
