Overview
The Third Army Group - also known as Army Group Steiner - was the Star League Defense Force Army Group formed to command the various SLDF Armies responsible for the Lyran Commonwealth Military Region.[1]
History
Star League Era
In common with the other SLDF Army Groups, the Third Army Group was commanded by a General who answered only to the SLDF High Command and the First Lord of the Star League.[1] In 2764 the Headquarters of the Third Army Group was located on Zollikofen; Zollikofen was also home to the headquarters of the Eleventh Army. While the Commanding Officer of the Third Army Group in 2764 was General Ariana Pasteur, her de facto deputy was General Mohammed Nagenda, the Commanding Officer of the Eleventh Army, due to General Pasteur's frequent trips to Terra, Tharkad or New Earth.[6] By the beginning of the Periphery Uprising, Army Group Steiner was responsible for the Elevenhth, Twelfth and Thirteenth Armies. When the Periphery Uprising saw the mass deployment of the majority of the SLDF into the territorial states, the Twelfth and Thirteenth Armies were deployed as part of that mass mobilisation. This left the Third Army Group with just one active Army, the Eleventh, but 30 assorted regiments of troops were transferred from the First Army to the Eighth, which was now responsible for the entire Free Worlds League Military Region alone.[5]
Operation CHIEFTAIN
The Third Army Group is not recorded as having taken an active part in Operation CHIEFTAIN;[7] at least three Army Groups were active during CHIEFTAIN but serving as training commands and not listed on the order of battle (the Sixteenth, Eighteenth and Twenty-third Army Groups)[1][7] and it is unclear whether the Third was still active during the campaign to free the Terran Hegemony, or if it had been disbanded as an organisation after the campaign against the Alliance ended.
