System Information
X:Y Coordinates-256.607 : -6.274[e]

The Altoona system was home to a barely habitable world, Altoona III,[1] and as of 2750 was located in the Furillo Province of the Protectorate of Donegal within the Lyran Commonwealth.

System Description[edit]

Altoona is located close to the Dixie and Rochers systems.[2]

System History[edit]

Altoona was colonized during the Star League era at some point after the end of the Reunification War[3][2] but was removed from maps during the Second Succession War[4][5] indicating that the system had been abandoned or depopulated.

Planetary History[edit]

Star League Era[edit]

During the Star League era Altoona III was home to a mining colony, despite the planet being barely habitable. With a population of just a few hundred thousand living in domed communities, Altoona III was a demanding place to live; humans could only breathe the atmosphere via filter masks, and all food raised outside the domes had to be intensely irradiated before it could be consumed. Despite this, the mining colony was significant enough to merit a Lyran Commonwealth Armed Forces garrison, but the posting was unpopular enough that when the Tenth Skye Rangers replaced the Fifteenth Skye Rangers in the mid-twenty-eighth century, the Fifteenth were happy to head to a posting on the Draconis Combine border.[1]

First Succession War[edit]

Following the bloody Lyran Commonwealth invasion of Bolan in March 2785—and a thorough and devastating scorched earth defense of Bolan by the Sixth Bolan Defenders—Altoona was struck by a retaliatory attack launched by the Bolan Defenders[30] in 2786, an attack that used nuclear and chemical weapons to bombard both environmental support facilities and industrial sites on the planet.[31] The Bolan Defenders' attack on Altoona wasn't the only retaliatory attack by the Bolan Defenders; also struck[30] in a similar fashion were the worlds of Duantia in 2788[31] and Myrrdin[30][31] in 2789,[31] and these campaigns—as well as the Bolan Defenders' defense of Rochers in the same timeframe - were all heavily damaging scorched earth campaigns that led to billions of casualties across the four worlds.[30]
