Plot summary
Evolved from a throw-away line in Technical Readout: Project Phoenix that is quoted in the preface, the story narrates a "raid" by General Motors on 7 April 3065 at a life-fire test range of their competitor, Ceres Metals, on Warlock. It demonstrates the superiority of the upgraded GM Phoenix Hawk over the Ceres Metals BJ2-O Blackjack Omni undergoing retrials. The unusual demonstration, combined with a message from Giovanni Estrella de la Sangre, prompts Overseer pro-tem Nikolai Kwiatkowski to consider his options with General Motors, especially given that the destruction of the Blackjack that he directed to engage the Phoenix Hawk does not bode well for his career otherwise.
