Revision as of 13:50, 29 January 2010

Welcome to the BattleMech WikiProject. We are a group dedicated to improving BattleTechWiki's coverage of BattleMechs. Feel free to join in by adding your name to the group, grabbing an article to complete or weighing in on the discussion.

Goals
  • Catalog every BattleMech used in BattleTech
    • Classic BattleTech [underway]
      • Add Solaris VII 'Mechs [better descriptions and images are needed]
      • Ensure all variants for all 'Mechs are present
    • MechWarrior: Dark Age [started]
    • Computer/Video Game Systems [awaiting action]
  • Categorize the BattleMechs (via the Portal) into:
    • Tech Base (Inner Sphere, Clan) [awaiting action]
    • Factions (Capellan, Clan Wolf, etc.) [awaiting action]
    • Battle Values (ranges of 500 each) [awaiting action]
    • Mass (by Weight Categories) [stalled]
    • Roles (Brawler, Skirmisher, etc) [awaiting action]
      • …etc.
Scope
  • A little vague right now, but we'll need to discuss the differences between CBT, MWDA & video game entries.

All mainstream Inner Sphere 'Mechs have been added to the Wiki.
All canon Clan 'Mechs now have articles.

Guidelines

  • CJKeys developed the current format used for BattleMechs (and adapted for every other unit type). The current concept for BattleMechs has that there are five sections:
    • Description : a basic description of the 'Mech
    • Armament : what does it carry and some notes on the same; not to be a simple list, but a narrative
    • Variants : list each type of variant seen, and if not from CBT, indicate so, in italics.
    • Notable Pilots: if any of the major characters pilot this 'Mech, then include a short description of the unit/pilot history and custom modifications. If possible, include how the character obtained the 'Mech and when he or she stopped using it.
    • References : links to the books or other source material used in any way to contribute to the article
    • Infobox : created with pre-established fields that need to be filled in with the relevant info
  • One thing to consider is that the articles tend towards to an in-character (IC) role, though there are some obvious out-of-character (OOC) bits included (ex: BV). In the text, if going OOC, use italics.
  • Link everything, at least once. If the term is Star League, link to it. If House Marik is referenced in the text, link to it. Link to other unit types, like DropShips. If the same term is used a lot, especially in the same paragraph, feel free to link only once. But link, even if the linked article does not yet exist: it will someday!
  • Italicize the name of the 'Mech being written about (don't link to it!). Do this for each mention.
  • In the variants section, list the whole designation again. For example, if the HCT-3F Hatchetman is the primary article, in the variant section, start off each entry from the hyphen, followed by a space, another hyphen and one more space. For example:
    • HCT-4M - The variant entry looks like this...
  • Any variants that have not been provided official CBT stats are to be given their own sections. This includes, but it not limited to, 'Mech and variants from video games and MechWarrior: Dark Age/Age of Destruction.

Open tasks

  • Discuss what categories, outside those limited to BattleMechs, should be attached to each 'mech article. (See talk page.)
  • Edit for mis-spellings, grammatical and formatting mistakes for current articles.
  • Place the Project BattleMech messagebox (see Tags below) on each 'Mech discussion page.

Categories

In order to make the BattleTechWiki as accessible as possible, proper categorization is paramount. Since this is Project BattleMechs, one of our tasks will be focusing on categorizing 'Mechs.

  • Right Now — categorization that is meant be already underway:
    • Currently, the only 'required' category is Category:BattleMechs. All BattleMechs should be in this category upon article creation.

  • On the Back Burner — categorization that is slated to begin when the previous task is, at a minimum, near-complete:
    • Categorizing 'Mechs into the more specific aspects (such as classes, weights, battle value, etc.) is currently on the back burner; but feel free to at populate the class (e.g., Category:Assault BattleMechs) and tonnage (e.g., Category:100 ton BattleMechs) categories if you have the time.

Note: 'Official' categories you can add 'Mechs to may be found at the BattleMech Portal.
