History[edit]

Bobby Begay was a MechWarrior and member of the Seventeenth Recon Regiment, also known as Camacho's Caballeros. Begay was a figure of some notoriety to many in the regiment, based on how he styilised himself around the concept of a Skin Walker or Navajo Wolf - an evil shapeshifter or witch of the very worst kind of the Dine in the mythology of the Navajo. This was one of the reasons the majority of the Caballero's fellow Navajo personnel shunned him,[3] as did the numerous Apaches within the regiment.[2] Despite Begay's reputation, by 3056 he was a Captain in the Caballeros, although this didn't stop one of Begay's fellow company commanders, Lieutenant Senior Grade James Kicking Bird, openly referring to Begay as an "evil thing".[4]

On the 19th of July 3047 Begay was piloting a Wolverine-class BattleMech he had named Skin Walker during a Caballeros raid on the city of Kalimtan on the Capellan Confederation world of Larsha. Begay suffered the misfortune of being targeted by Cassiopeia Suthorn, then a young conscripted soldier; Suthorn disabled Skin Walker using a mop handle and a high voltage power cable. Begay was only prevented from gunning down Suthorn in retaliation by the direct intervention of Lieutenant Senior Grade Patricia Camacho, daughter of the Caballero's Commanding Officer, Colonel Carlos Camacho.[1]

In 3056, while the Caballeros were employed by Chandrasekhar Kurita to provide security for his facilities on Hachiman, Begay was one of those in the regiment who felt that Colonel Camacho was no longer qualified to remain in command.[4] When the Caballeros were forced to fight the Ninth Ghost regiment Begay spent part of the battle out headhunting ghost 'Mechs on his own, but also led a ferocious flanking attack with the surviving jump-capable 'Mechs from the Caballeros First Battalion to provide time and cover for those 'Mechs from Adelante and Bronco companies that couldn't jump to retreat behind the walls of the Hachiman-Taro Enterprises complex in Masamori.[5]

By July 3058 Begay had been promoted to the rank of Force Commander within the Caballeros.[6] When forces from the Kokuryu-kai attempted to assassinate Coordinator Theodore Kurita on Luthien while holding many of the Caballeros hostage, Begay killed an armed DEST commando using a wrecking bar.[2] During the battle for Towne in 3057 Begay had captured a Nightsky; after killing the DEST commando between him and his 'Mech, Begay joined the battle raging in the Cinema City area of Luthien. Although Begay lost the Nightsky when its fusion engine exploded he downed at least two 'Mechs, a Hornet and the Bushwacker piloted by the leader of the Black Dragon forces, Terence O'Hanrahan, killing both opponents.[7]

Begay was described as being tall and brown, with black hair and eyes[8] and a handsome, mad face.[2] He was also described as one of those members of the Caballeros who were probably insane,[9] a man who lived for those moments when he could unleash the carefully-nurtured sense of rage he felt towards all of creation.[2]

BattleMechs[edit]

From at least as early as 3047 Begay piloted a Wolverine BattleMech, which he named Skin Walker - and he painted the 'Mech's name on the 'Mech.[1] After the battles on Towne in 3057 Begay switched to piloting a Nightsky. Begay painted the Nightsky grey, and added a black wolf's head with green eyes and a lolling red tongue across the 'Mech's chest.[7]
