The Cassias system is home to at least one habitable world, Cassias I, and as of 3145 Cassias was located in the Barlow's End Prefecture of the New Samarkand Military District within the Draconis Combine.[2][3]

System Description

The Cassias system is located near the McGehee and Udibi systems[2][3] and consists of at least one world orbiting a class M5Ia primary.[1]

System History

The Cassias system was colonized during the Twenty-fourth century.[1]

Cassias I - more commonly known simply as Cassias - is the innermost planet in the Cassias system and has four moons named Bambang, Budiono, Kinjuri and Ramah.[1]

Planetary History

in 2553 Federated Suns and Draconis Combine forces engage in the Battle of Cassias.[6]

Cassias is a tropical world located on the Draconis Combine/Federated Suns border. It also acted as the border between the "Outback" and the more densely populated inner systems of the Federated Suns. Originally settled by Islamic Indonesians in the twenty-fourth century, Cassias grew into one of the AFFS' most important regional commands. For centuries Cassias served as a staging area in every major Federated Suns offensive against the Combine. Even outside of war, the world served as a base for deep-penetration raiding forces and as a forward command post.[1]

Though it was highly prized for its location Cassias had a thriving agricultural industry based on textiles, rubber, and timber. There were also many common ores, petroleum deposits, and gemstones as well. All these exports provided a high standard of living for native Cassians.[1]

Cassias was captured by the Armed Forces of the Federated Suns in 2809 as part of the second major AFFS counter-offensive of the First Succession War against the Draconis Combine.[16]

By the thirty-first century the inhabitants of Cassias lived mostly on the three main continents: Borneo, Java, and Kalimantan. Their cities however were frequently found inside atmospheric domes to protect the inhabitants from the higher than average concentration of nitrogen in the atmosphere. The planet had many atmospheric scrubbers that had converted the atmosphere to something more hospitable to humans, but the cities remained domed.[1]

In 3065 the Fifth Sword of Light and Ryuken-go were deployed in DCMS's reprisal against the Federated Suns incursion during the FedCom Civil War. The unit attempted to claim Cassias, but poor coordination lead to the Davion defenders maintaining control of the planet.[49] Hauptmann-General Kev Evans, the Commanding Officer of the defending Seventeenth Avalon Hussars RCT, managed to end five months of mobile defensive actions against the Fifth Sword and Ryuken-go on the 12th of November 3065, taking up a defensive line at the base of the Romen Mountains. The center of Evans' defensive position was the Callas Line, a series of entrenched fortifications that had been constructed in the past by a combination of the planetary militia and the Third Crucis Lancers.[50]

After the initial DCMS attack on Evans' position had been thrown back, Tai-sa Davis Shotoku of the Ryuken-go led elements of his command on a flanking attack that led them into direct combat with the Third Battalion of the Seventeenth. The Commanding Officer of the Third Battalion, Major Chad Thomas, was killed in the first few minutes of the battle, and Captain Sarah Blair assumed command of the battalion from the cockpit of her Bushwacker. Sarah's leadership led to the Third throwing back repeated attacks by the Ryuken-go, and gun camera footage from the engagement showed Blair trading fire with Shotoku's Hatamoto-Chi.[50]

The heavy losses taken by the DCMS forces in what was known as the Battle of Callas changed the campaign for control of Cassias, allowing Evans to inflict further losses over the next several weeks as the RCT applied pressure to the Fifth Sword and the Ryuken-go. With the prospect of defeat looking, Shotoku assembled two companies of volunteers for an all-out attack on the Seventeenth, an attack he launched on the 31st of January 3066. Shotoku's 'Mech was downed during the resulting battle, and recordings of the battle showed that while Shotoku was engaged by three different Hussars 'Mechs, it was Sarah who was responsible for the final blow, her accurate ranged strikes felling Shotoku. The Combine forces subsequently gave up the battle for control of the planet on the 6th of February.[50]

Having been subject to a number of deep raids across several worlds by Federated Suns commandos and Draconis March forces seeking POWs from the FedCom Civil War in early August 3068[51], the Draconis Combine retaliated by launching a series of raids and attacks against Federated Suns worlds. The retaliatory attacks took place in the second week of September, and Cassias was one of the worlds hit by a raiding force.[52]

The DCMS unit assigned was the Twelfth Ghost, and it got into a brutal fight against the defending Twelfth Deneb Light Cavalry. The Nordique-Exxor chemical processing plant was leveled outside of Jubalis in the fierce combat, sending a cloud of toxic fumes into the atmosphere that forced the evacuation of three nearby metropolitan areas. The last report from the system on 17 September 3068 showed that Cassian airspace remained contested, with most of the commercial traffic still grounded. After the incident, fighting was sparse on the ground, with rumors that the Twelfth Ghost were in retreat across the Blacklick continent. The Twelfth Ghost left the planet after that action.[53]
