The Cavanaugh system is home to at least one habitable world, Cavanaugh II, and as of 3151 was located in the Duchy of Tamarind-Abbey province of the Free Worlds League.[3]

System Description

The Cavanaugh system is located near the Epsilon and Nockatunga systems[4][5] and consists of a class M9II primary orbited by at least two planets. During the thirty-first century a recharge station was in place at the system zenith jump point.[1][2]

System History

The Cavanaugh system was colonized at some point during or shortly after the First Exodus from Terra and was a member of the Free Worlds League by the end of the Age of War.[6][7]

Template:InfoBoxPlanetStandard Cavanaugh II is the second planet in the system and has four moons named Cambriae, Gododin, Nennius and Tennyson.[1][2]

Planetary History

Cavanaugh was discovered in 2290 and then sold in 2325 to a member of the former English court, Duke Alvin Windsor-Moon. Among the first settlers were the Arthurian Actors Guild, and many of the locations on the world take their names from Arthurian legends.[1]

The Age of War

Cavanaugh II was one of the worlds the Lyran Commonwealth managed to recapture from the Free Worlds League in 2468 thanks to the use of BattleMechs, a military asset that the League wouldn't be able to field until 2470.[7]

First Succession War

Cavanaugh II was one of a number of Lyran Commonwealth border worlds to be struck by a devastating cross-border raids by the Free Worlds League between 2786 and 2790, as the Lyran Commonwealth Armed Forces began to crack under the pressure of continuing efforts to annex the Bolan Thumb while also attempting to maintain a defensive posture against both the Draconis Combine Mustered Soldiery and the Free Worlds League Military.[39]

Third Succession War

In 2952 Free Worlds League forces spearheaded by the 3rd Marik Militia successfully invaded Cavanaugh II. Suspicious of the 3rd's abilities, the Commonwealth prioritized a headhunting mission against the 3rd's commander over retaking the planet. The Eridani Light Horse succeeded in killing him and confirmed him as the Commonwealth traitor Mikhail Tertren.[17]

The Jihad

Following the invasion of the Free Worlds League by the Skye and Bolan Provinces of the Lyran Alliance in what was termed Operation ÜBERSCHATTEN, Marshall Jeremy Brett took command of the local FWLM and launched a counteroffensive, under the name Operation BROKEN FIST. BROKEN FIST went beyond simply attempting to recapture worlds that the Lyrans had seized, striking into Lyran space across numerous worlds. Cavanaugh II was one of the worlds hit and was assaulted by the League forces on the 28th of September 3068.[32]

Dark Age

Cavanaugh was conquered by the Seventh Tamarind Regulars and annexed to the reborn Free Worlds League in 3143.[38]

Geography

Cavanaugh II has five continents named Bedivere, Gareth, Gawain, Mordred and Tristram.[2][1] The capital, Caerleon, is on a small island off Gawain.. Mordred is largely uninhabited due to volcanoes and earthquakes. [1]

Planetary Locations

  • Caerleon: the planetary capital city, located on Gawain.[2]

Notes

Naming conventions on Cavanaugh II appear to have been strongly influenced by the tales and legends of King Arthur; the continents are named various for knights of the Round Table (Bedivere, Gareth, Gawain and Tristram) and the illegitimate son of King Arthur and his half-sister Morgaine (also referred to as Morgan or Morgana), Mordred. The capital city of Cavanaugh II, Caerleon, has the same name as the birthplace of Mordred and was the site of a large Roman settlement in Wales during the era of the Roman Empire, one of the three largest garrisons in Britain (the two contemporaries to Caerleon being York and Chester). The noted author Geoffrey of Monmouth wrote at length about Caerleon, making it one of the most important cities in Britain in his work and the capital city of King Arthur.

The four moons of Cavanaugh II, Cambriae, Gododin, Nennius and Tennyson are all names also associated with the legends around King Arthur; Nennius was a Welsh monk from the ninth century often accredited with authorship of the Historia Brittonum, which was the first historical text to portray King Arthur - although Arthur is depicted variously as a military leader, soldier and warrior but not a king. Cambriae is likely to be a references to the Annales Cambriae, or "The Annals of Wales", a collection of Cambro-Latin chronicles dating from approximately the twelfth and thirteenth century (although some works within the Annales Cambriae are purportedly copies of earlier tenth century texts) and which have been argued to contain two entries referencing King Arthur, one entry referencing Medraut (Mordred) and one on Merlin. The various entries cover the Battle of Badon, the Battle of Armterid and the Strife of Camlann.

The moon Gododin is most likely a reference to Y Gododdin, a Welsh medieval poem that recounts the elegies of Gododdin, an ancient Brittonic kingdom; Y Gododdin makes what may be the earliest known reference to what might also be King Arthur in the form of a comparison between one of the warriors recounted in the battle of Catraeth and Arthur. Lastly, Tennyson is likely a reference to Alfred Tennyson, a noted poet whose works include the most famous Victorian-era adaptation of the legend of King Arthur and the Knights of the Round Table, Morte d'Arthur.
