The Dagda system is the location of a habitable world, Dagda III, and as of 3085 was located in the Deep Periphery region known as the Clan Homeworlds.

System Description

In relation to the capital of the Clan Homeworlds, Strana Mechty, Dagda is located at the coordinates -164:-181.[3] The Dagda system consists of an F9V class primary named "Tuath" orbited by eight worlds.[1][4]

System History

During the Star League In Exile period under Aleksandr Kerensky, Dagda was chosen as the home port for the fleet due to the abundant natural resources available for a shipyard.[5]

Operations SABLE SUN and Klondike

Home to the only shipyard in the Pentagon, Dagda's factories and cache had been destroyed in the fighting that ensued during the Pentagon Civil War. Only two enclaves of spacefarers remained in-system, each stationed at one of the system's Jump points. The right to clear zenith jump point was won by Clan Burrock, who assigned Star Colonel Qudi Hutchinson. Star Colonel Hutchinson jumped a flotilla of several JumpShips and an Avatar-class Heavy Cruiser, the Constantineau. Using ECM to interdict the zenith enclave, the Clan flotilla forced the enclave to surrender, mostly by firing a few warning shots. However, three JumpShip did not surrender, forcing the Constantineau to fire on and destroy their engineering decks.[6]

More concerning were three DropShips burning for Dagda III. Having escaped the Clan flotilla, the DropShips attempted to deliver their cargoes to the McMillan Collective. However, the Constantineau was able to Jump to the planet's pirate Jump point and intercepting the three ships.[6]

The engagement for the nadir Jump was botched, leading to tremendous loss of ships and spacefarer casualties. Clan Widowmaker won the honor of capturing the enclave stationed at the nadir Jump point. Star Captain Cyril Herling, in command of the nadir-bound Clan flotilla with the Lola III-class Destroyer Black Venom attempted to force the submission of the nadir spacefarer enclave by translating next to the enclave at point-blank range. Though this tactic had worked elsewhere in the Pentagon,[7] the tactic here backfired when several ships from the enclave began to flee. While the Black Venom reacted quickly enough to disable one of the three fleeing JumpShips. Unfortunately for the Clan squadron and the enclave, a second pair of JumpShips, shielded by the flurry of fleeing vessels, attempted a Simul-Jump. The resulting released energy wave caused a cascade that detonated a succession of Kearny-Fuchida Drives, including the drive of the Black Venom. The magnitude of the blast was mistakenly believed to be the result of a thermonuclear device detonated in defense of the enclave, as witnessed from the surface of the Dagda III. Survivors of the blast were rescued over the following week, while it took months to remove debris to allow the nadir point to admit Jump traffic again.[6]

Dagda III

Template:InfoBoxPlanetStandard Dagda III — more commonly known simply as Dagda — has been held by, and contested by, several Clans at the same time for the majority of its history as a settled world.[1]

Political History

Discovery and Settlement

In August 24th, 2786 the Exodus Fleet of the SLDF led by General Aleksandr Kerensky discovered Dagda and the rest of the star systems that makes up what they would call the Pentagon Worlds. Dagda was first settled on the 17th of September by the first of the weary passengers and soldiers of the SLDF.[8] Dagda was the fourth world of the Pentagon to be settled, it was named by settlers for the Irish pantheon of luck. The planet, due to rich mineral resources, became the principal mining world for what became the Star League-In-Exile. The Exile settlers used high-tech life support equipment to exploit the uplands where the atmosphere of the planet was very thin.

Pentagon Civil War and Devastation

The Exodus Civil War in 2801, the war devastated the population, especially those who depended on the sophisticated life support systems.[9] By 2821 there were two dozen factions. The ten most significant political factions or groupings active on the planet were: the Hailes Commonwealth, Oriente Dominion, Ryan's Roughnecks, Imbros Collectives, McMillan Collective, The Chosen, Brotherhood of Donegal, The Drakkars, Mimosa Atoll and Penn Atoll.[10][2]

Operation Klondike

The 4 Clans assigned to liberate Dagda during Operation Klondike were Clan Burrock, Clan Fire Mandrill, Clan Goliath Scorpion, and Clan Widowmaker. They were later reinforced by Clan Jade Falcon and Clan Wolf.

Riva

Surface fighting on Dagda began when Clan Goliath Scorpion, whose specialty was special operations, dropped on the continent Riva into the capital of the McMillan Collective, Firebase Delta, a massive planetary defense facility, in the early morning of 29 July 2821. The Collective was a high priority, due to their ability to defend the eastern hemisphere of Dagda with surface-to-orbit weaponry, as well as their relative abundance of remaining Star League technology. Surprising the Collective, Clan Goliath Scorpion dropped two Stars of BattleMechs, and using a pair of the modified, armored Torrent Bombers, dropped two units of commandoes, including saKhan Jenna Scott. The commandoes disabled defense communications, while the Torrents ran supplies and the BattleMech Binary neutralized heavy targets. The Scorpion operation ended the organized defensive capabilities of the McMillan Collective in one night, though at great expense. The BattleMech Binary initially deployed into Firebase Delta was all but killed in a booby trap set by the Collective in "Satan's Table". The sole survivor engaged his jump jets before plummeting into the volcano. Thereafter personally managed by Khan Cyrus Elam, the Scorpion forces hunted the rest of the Collective, with saKhan Scott killing their leader, James McMillan. Khan Elam personally executed the commanding officer who sprung the magma trap, sentencing her to being dropped into the volcano.[11][12][13][14]

One of the two Torent Bombers survived the operation, the "Venom's Kiss", the aircraft that ferried saKhan Scott to the communications bunker. The Venom's Kiss is prominently displayed in the antechamber of Clan Goliath Scorpion's genetic repository.[13][14]

After subduing the McMillan Collective, Clan Goliath Scorpion continued its conquest from August through September on Riva against two smaller powers, Graz and Borodino. However, the occupation proved deadly to many Scorpion infantry in Borodino, when rumors began to circulate about Clan atrocities. When the Scorpion hierarchy discovered the rumors originated with The Chosen, a religious faction run by a doomsday cult, Clan Goliath Scorpion quickly moved against The Chosen stop their agitation. The Chosen maintained a monastery citadel at such altitude it required artificial atmosphere. The citadel was situated in the volcanic uplands with a single pass connecting them with the outside world. Khan Elam led a combined BattleMech and armor assault, drawing out the military and distracting The Chosen sufficiently for saKhan Scott to surprise them with an advance through the high plateaus. The flanking shattered their military, forcing The Chosen leadership to attempt to wait out the Goliath Scorpion siege. With action the directive of the ilKhan, Elam issued a final warning to surrender on 30 September. The warning ignored, Clan Goliath Scorpion invaded the citadel, taking few casualties from the starved and depleted population. Half of the cult had committed mass suicide already, with the cult leader, Kaline Escher, sentenced to death by ejection from a citadel airlock.[15]

Salò

With Firebase Delta occupied, Clan Fire Mandrill deployed to the western hemisphere, to the star-shaped continent of Salò on 30 July. The campaign started poorly, with Mandrill ammunition, parts, and supplies scattered broadly across Mt. Lucca, a stratovolcano, along with the Clan MechWarriors. Only able to secure half of their supplies, the ever competitive Mandrills compounded their misfortune by aggressively bidding, especially between Khan Raymond Sainze and saKhan Laura Payne. Unfortunately for the Mandrills, the concept of cutdown had not been firmly established in the Clan bidding ritual, prolonging each mission and causing undue injuries and damage to their units. Were it not for the desperate condition of their opponents' equipment, Clan Fire Mandrill may have had difficulty achieving its objectives against its numerous and determined opponents.[16]

Dratha

Waiting for the cessation of hostilities between Clan Goliath Scorpion and the McMillan Collective, Clan Burrock and Widowmaker dropped onto Dagda with a joint commando operation in the City of Folke on the eastern continent Dratha on the night of 12 August. Folke was the port capital of the Hailes Commonwealth. Widowmaker paratroopers took the command center for the city, while Burrock paratroopers targeted the cutter Fastidious, taking the ship and sinking it near the mouth of the harbor, thereby trapping the Commonwealth blue navy. The operation effectively eliminated the Hailes Commonwealth, and provided Clans Burrock and Widowmaker a defensible position to prepare to advance into the continent.[17]

Response by Hailes' neighbors came quickly. Before Folke was fully pacified, the aggressive Oriente Dominion attempted to strike the city by AeroSpace assets. However, the poor condition of their fighters and inexperience of the crews allowed Clan Widowmaker to quickly gain air superiority, which they turned into airstrikes against the Oriente Dominion capital, Cuidad Oriente. Clan Burrock joined Widowmaker, splitting air superiority over the region over the Dominion and Ryan's Roughnecks as ground forces bartered a surrender with the Imbros Agricultural Collectives.[17]

Loosed on the rest of the continent by the beginning of September, Clans Widowmaker and Burrock divided their attentions. the Widowmakers turned north and west, "clockwise", around the coast of the continent, while Clan Burrock brought the invasion north and east, "counterclockwise", around the coast.[18] Their initial adversaries, the Oriente Dominion and Ryan's Roughnecks, certainly had manpower, but lacked the advanced weaponry and cohesion of the invaders. The Widowmakers took Cuidad Oriente six days ahead of schedule, and the Burrocks completed their conquest against the Roughnecks with a full day to spare. From the end of September through October, free to prosecute the rest of the campaign on Dratha as they saw fit, both Clans continued north up their coastlines. While many states simply capitulated to the Clans, a few mounted a determined resistance. During the course of this clearance, an assassin fatally shot saKhan Mariel Sanders during an inspection on 22 October, 2821. Though the wounds did not immediately kill Sanders, she was medevaced to Folke, then to the Condor-class medical DropShip SLS Moorfields, where she died of her wound on 26 October. The assassin was killed in the attempt, an action the ilKhan did not sanction, citing the need to interrogate the assassin. saKhan Sanders was the highest-ranking Clan officer killed on Dagda.[19]

After the death of saKhan Sanders, Clan Widowmaker met in an enclave in the mining village of Sunflower. After two days, the Clan elected Cal Jorgensson the second saKhan of the Clan. Jorgensson was aggressive, abrasive, and outspoken, questioning the difficulty of the Mandrill and Scorpion campaigns, and seeding a heated feud with the Goliath Scorpions. After the death of Sanders, the Widowmakers became especially brutal, not offering surrender. The final coastal enclaves suffered more civilian and infrastructure destruction as clan Widowmaker completed its campaign.[20]

Garda and Tenno

With Salò and Riva operations complete, Clans Goliath Scorpion and Fire Mandrill undertook pacification of the two least populous continents on Dagda, Garda and Tenno. Garda, an inhospitable rocky upland, was home to a few city-states that fell to Clan Fire Mandrill, despite their lack of cohesion. Conquest of Tenno was given to Clan Goliath Scorpion, who were capable in operations near the coastline, but cautious about the final operation, the mining concern inland at Black Mesa, controlled by the Drakkar. Defended by nearly two dozen BattleMechs and armed IndustrialMechs, supported by a maze of underground tunnels and armed miners, the Drakkar were on a formidable defensive footing; Scorpion scouting operations had resulted in casualties in two of three Binaries deployed to the continent. Khans Elam and Scott worried their already weakened forces may face significant, determined resistance from the Drakkars, in regions of Dagda so inhospitable, casualties could be worsened by the climate. Again with the ilKhan blessing, Khan Elam negotiated a surrender with the leader of the Drakkar, Pranay Sawent. The negotiation involved a show of force, an orbital bombardment of a local peak, that Sawent could not ignore. Sawent was later convicted and sentenced to life in the Prinz Eugen, but released through amnesty after the death of Nicholas Kerensky.[21]

Atolls

With only three populated Atolls present on Dagda, Clans Fire Mandrill and Goliath Scorpion bid for the right conquer these man-made islands. By continuing their aggressive bidding style, Clan Fire Mandrill won the rights to liberate two of the three Atolls, Penn and Mimosa Atoll, with infantry assets. Clan Goliath Scorpion won the right to liberate Kepler Atoll.[22]

The aggressive bidding style did not hurt Clan Fire Mandrill. Mimosa Atoll simply surrendered at first request, while Penn Atoll surrendered after being threatened by sinking. However, Clan Goliath Scorpion was not so lucky. Bidding two teams to take Kepler Atoll, Goliath Scorpion infantry David Madsen and Naomi Djerassi were welcomed by Kepler's leadership, including potentate Marco Wye, to discuss terms. After terms were agreed upon, and as Madsen and Djerassi prepared their shuttle for launch, Kepler Atoll sprang its trap. The team was ambushed by Kepler soldiers. Madsen killed five assailants but was shot after his pistol jammed. Djerassi killed four, but was captured, beaten and tortured while being taunted by Wye, and then fed to seawolves. However, the seawolves were intelligent cetaceans, and saved Djerassi from drowning. Badly injured but free to conduct a guerrilla campaign on board the Atoll, Djerassi killed 50 soldiers over the next 15 days, sending Kepler into a panic. On the final day of her partisan campaign, she fed Wye to the captive seawolves, then caused an explosion. Djerassi and a dozen Kepler citizens were found alive on life rafts in the aftermath of the explosion.[22]

San Biaggio

ilKhan Nicholas Kerensky had envisioned the four Dagdan invading Clans to be completed with their combat operations, and ready to undertake a final joint operation to liberate San Biaggio, home of the fortress-like Brian Cache Dag-92-906, better known as the Black Brian. However, the ilKhan had misgivings regarding the effectiveness of four Clans by the end of the Dagdan campaign. Clan Fire Mandrill had little cohesion and was prone to infighting. Clan Goliath Scorpion had more than 25% of their Clan killed by the end of their operations, while Clan Widowmaker had become overly punitive in their conduct of Klondike, and a potential liability in any future operations.[23]

Therefore, Kerensky deployed Clans Jade Falcon and Wolf to the liberation of the Black Brian, with Clans Goliath Scorpion and Fire Mandrill relegated to policing duties, over their strenuous objections.[24] Their opponent, the Brotherhood of Donegal, who defended the cache since the beginning of the Pentagon Civil War. The Cache occupied the Thorin Pass, one of the few passes crossing San Biaggio, and had not fallen once during the decades of strife.[23]

Clan Jade Falcon was given the honor of taking the cache itself, while Clan Wolf would secure passes. Clans Widowmaker and Burrock were tasked with establishing AeroSpace superiority and claiming secondary objectives. The joint operation began in the first weeks of March 2822, with the Widowmakers, Burrocks, and Wolves achieving their objectives. This left the Jade Falcons to complete the conquest. Exterior defenses of the Black Brian were then cleared by MechWarrior Lisa Buhallin, whose assault Star staged a series of hit-and-run attacks, under cover from the ilKhan's Atlas and his unit. With the Cache itself disarmed, Clans Burrock, Fire Mandrill, Goliath Scorpion, and Widowmaker would form a cordon around the cache, while Wolf would gain entrance. This would allow fresh Jade Falcon units to enter the complex. Operation FERRET, as it was dubbed, began on 2 April 2822, with three Binaries of Clan Wolf attacking the three entrances of the Black Brian. One of the three entrances breached, with Wolf reserves securing the opening. With their fortress breached, the Brotherhood of Donegal retreated into the cache.[23]

Clan Falcon prosecuted the clearing of the Brotherhood of Donegal, unaided (though aid was offered). Fighting an experienced foe, with skill and defensive knowledge of their cache, it took until 12 April before the final BattleMech assets of the Brotherhood had been neutralized, but infantry fighting continued until 26 May 2822. The last prisoner was personally escorted from Black Brian cache by Khan Elizabeth Hazen, who was surprised to find all 19 Khans present for a Grand Council summoned in sercret by the ilKhan to mark the moment. The end of Operation FERRET, the clearing of Black Brian, meant the end of Operation Klondike.[23]

The Golden Century

Clan Goliath Scorpion underwater mining operations on Dagda lead to the creation of the Water Elemental Mining Suit in 2842. This suit would become the basis for all Clan Battle Armor in the future. In recognizing this combat potential, visiting Clan Wolf forces attempted to acquire one of these suits in a Trial of Possession from Clan Goliath Scorpion in 2860. While the Wolf forces were defeated in the trial by Goliath Scorpion Point Commander Sarah, Clan Wolf would continue efforts to procure the suits via trade between the Clans. This trade would lead to Clan Goliath Scorpion gaining mineral rights to almost all of Dagda's oceans in exchange for Clan Wolf gaining access to the suits.[25][26]

Wars of Reaving

In early 3067 Kindraa Kline found itself in a perilous position; two of Kindraa Mick-Kreese's Clusters, the Eleventh Battle Force and the Thirty-second Vanguard Battle Cluster joined Iota Galaxy of Clan Blood Spirit in a joint attack against a Clan Star Adder holding on Tathis. Envious of the growing prosperity that Kindra Mick-Kreese was undergoing as a result of their increasing association with the Blood Spirits, two ad hoc Clusters of troops from Kindraa Kline, formed from elements of the Twenty-seventh, Thirty-first and Forty-second Vanguard Clusters journeyed from Foster and Shadow and dropped into the battle raging between the Star Adders and the Blood Spirit/Mick-Kreese force. This caused all of those involved to suffer some friendly fire, and ultimately left the two ad hoc Kline Clusters at less than a quarter of their prebattle strength when they finally departed. This represented a serious reduction in military capability for Kindraa Kline and left them obviously open to predation from other Clans, particularly the Star Adders, who shared enclaves with Kindra Kline on Dagda. Faced with the prospect of annihilation, either at the hands of the Star Adders or others, and manipulated by Jas Keller, Kindra Kline accepted the inevitable and were absorbed by Kindra Mick-Kreese, forming Kindraa Mick-Kreese-Kline.[27]

In May 3071, following the formal Abjurement of Clan Wolf by the Grand Council in April, Clans Coyote, Goliath Scorpion and Steel Viper jockeyed among themselves for position in performing the Abjuration. Clan Coyote was successful in defeating both the Goliath Scorpion and Steel Viper bids, intent on proceeding with a prior agreement struck between Khan Dana Kufahl[citation needed] of the Coyotes and Khan Vlad Ward of the Wolves that would allow the wolves to extract much of their resources from the Homeworlds within minimal violence. These plans went awry when Clans Blood Spirit, Cloud Cobra and Steel Viper decided that the Coyotes were being too slow in the execution of the Abjurement and forced the issue by attacking the remaining Wolf enclaves across the various Homeworld planets.[27]

The Clan Wolf forces on Dagda consisted of a Star of solahma warriors defending the W-9 industrial complex. Clan Cloud Cobra attempted to seize the complex using the Ninety-ninth Battle Cluster from Omicron Galaxy, but discovered that the labyrinthine structure strongly favored the Wolf warriors, who were intimately familiar with it; under the command of Star Captain Nobel, the solahma warriors spent two days stalking the Cloud Cobra warriors and dropping them one at a time. The battle escalated after the second day with Clan Blood Spirit deployed the Forty-second Crimson Vanguard Cluster to try and seize the factory, clashing with the Ninety-ninth Battle Cluster as they both tried to kill the last two solahma warriors. The two Wolf warriors retreated to the heart of the complex before being captured, and fought to the death when cornered; the resulting explosion shattered the industrial complex and gutted both attacking Clusters, reducing the Ninety-ninth to less than a Binary of survivors.[28]

In 3072 the Society moved to take power within the Clan Homeworlds, and Dagda was one of the first worlds targeted by them; unbeknownst to the warrior caste, Dagda was a Society bastion, a world containing various sites were production and research were conducted out of sight of the warriors, utilizing nests that had been forgotten.[29] By the end of January Dagda had gone dark, with all communications with other worlds stopped.[30] This was a pattern being repeated on other worlds; some HPG stations lost their connection to the main grid, while others were sabotaged via internal explosions. On Dagda the HPG went offline for some four days as a result of technical glitches.[31]

At some point after Dagda went dark a volcano known as Mount Hades erupted on Dagda, inflicting substantial damage on the Goliath Scorpion mining operations there. In late November 3073 Khan Ariel Suvorov of the Goliath Scorpions followed up on negotiations with Khan Connor Rood of Clan Ice Hellion over the Absorption of the weaker Clan by leading a small task force consisting of the Twenty-fourth Scorpion Cuirassiers and the Cameron-class battlecruiser CGS Hephaestus to attempt to negotiate a similar Absorption of Clan Fire Mandrill. Suvorov's forces encountered a Coyote naval Star in the Shadow system, along with no sign of any of Clan Fire Mandrill on what had been their homeworld; unwilling to face down a larger military force that refused to respond to attempts to communicate, Suvorov continued on to Dagda. Suvorov already knew that the eruption of Mount Hades in the Satan's Table region of Dagda had badly affected her Clan's mining operations, but had received no word from the two major undersea manufacturing complexes her Clan operated on the planet.[32]

What Suvorov discovered on arrival was that not only had almost two thirds of the mineral production been lost, but many undersea enclaves had been shattered and the planet had apparently been subjected to prolific orbital bombardment, leaving the ecosystem unstable and in decline. Some of Clan Fire Mandrill had managed to survive on the planet, but the highest-ranking individual Suvorov could make contact with was Star Colonel Hampton Schroeder, along with a small group of scientists, technicians and warriors at Folke. Suvorov rescued the survivors, packing them in aboard the Haphaestus and her attendant DropShips. Star Colonel Schroeder and the Scorpion Khan then fought a Trial of Possession to decide the result of an offer of an Absorption into the Goliath Scorpions for the surviving Fire Mandrill personnel; conducted as a boxing match, the Trial was a victory for Suvorov, who downed Schroeder several rounds into the match.[32]

Suvorov subsequently dispatched three more convoys of vessels to Dagda to remove as many of the Absorbed Fire Mandrill civilians as possible; the last of these convoys, a four-JumpShip fleet, was ambushed in the Dagda system by a force from the Bandit Caste as the convoy readied for departure in late January 3074. As a result of the ambush more than ten thousand civilians were killed. The revelation of just how catastrophic the damage was at Dagda accelerated the Absorption of the Ice Hellions by the Scorpions, as it was obvious to the Scorpion Clan Council that the remaining Ice Hellion assets — both personnel and matériel — had more value than originally estimated.[32]

The Scorpions continued to maintain a presence on Dagda, including a genetic repository or research site. Bedeviled by Society tampering that left the percentage of their uncontaminated Bloodname legacies at less than ten percent, Clan Cloud Cobra began systematically targeting other Clans in small Trials to obtain new genetic legacies while researching possible alternatives. By early 3078, the Cloud Cobra scientists had identified that genetic material from a large number of Ice Hellion genetic legacies, now held by the Scorpions, would help rebuild the Cloud Cobra stock. The Cloud Cobras began targeting the Scorpions in earnest, and soon discovered that the Scorpions were experimenting with blending genetic material from the Eridani Light Horse mercenary unit in with their own legacies. Khan Hollyann Kardaan denounced the Scorpions to the Grand Council, successfully calling for the Abjurement of the Scorpions; as the other Clans targeted Scorpion material resources, the Cloud Cobras targeted Scorpion Blood Chapels and genetic legacies. This included seizing material from the genetic repository on Dagda in early 3078.[33]
