Daniel was named Duke of Hesperus II after his parents died in a VTOL accident in 3051; he was little more than a figurehead for Marshal Brandal Gareths, secret aspirations to create his own state. He seized the opportunity to "tutor" the young Duke Daniel, taking advantage of the boy's idealism and dream of becoming a MechWarrior. Gareth separated him from the rest of his surviving family and secretly assumed control of Defiance Industries. Gareth launched what he dubbed "Operation EXCALIBUR", a plan to secede the Isle of Skye and create his own state, which he called "the Free Star Republic".
