Elijah Hughes
Profile
ProfessionDropShip Captain

Elijah Hughes, a self-described opportunist, was the captain and owner[1] of the Danais-class DropShip Whatever It Takes as of 3150.

At some point prior, he had claimed to the parents of an abducted child on Emporia that he knew of the child's whereabouts, took the ransom money, and left the planet. The kidnappers later contacted the parents and demanded the ransom be paid again, claiming to know nothing of Elijah Hughes. Although the parents received their child back, it broke them. Hughes' reputation was subsequently tarnished.[2]

Hughes' DropShip was headed for Emporia again on 4 April 3150 when it passed within sight of the JumpShip Nowaki. He realized that the Nowaki was not the merchant vessel it pretended to be, accellerated his voyage to the planet, and tried to warn them (or possibly sell the information). Although his report caused some alarm, his reputation as an "unreliable" character ultimately meant his warnings were not taken seriously enough, allowing the ostensible "merchant fleet" composed of military DropShips carrying the Seventh Ghost Regiment to land on Emporia unopposed and secure the starport and capital city in a commando action.

Since commercial DropShips were still allowed to come and go, Hughes could provide information to Nadine Roux that made it possible to mount a rescue operation for the captured MechWarriors and nobles. He also promised to get the message of what was happening on Emporia out, as a means to settle an unspecified debt.<ref name=ID118> His DropShip took off from Emporia unopposed on 7 April. However, he still was not entirely trusted.
