Plot summary

When the Second Taurian Lancers invaded Bromhead, the Bromhead Planetary Militia were quickly slaughtered. The Acero, a modified Leopard-class DropShip under the command of Captain Piotr Majikowski, not only escaped the slaughter, but also badly damaged a Taurian Union-class DropShip, and then managed to catch a grounded Mule-class DropShip full of supplies and destroy it.[1]

Majikowski gambles that the loss of the supplies aboard the Mule will put pressure on the Taurian Defense Force to resupply Bromhead ahead of the inevitable Armed Forces of the Federated Suns counterattack. Majikowski correctly anticipates that any Taurian resupply mission will arrive at the Bromhead zenith jump point, for a number of reasons, including that the zenith jump point is the location of the system recharge station. He is proven right when, on the 16th of February 3067, the Scout-class JumpShip TCS Starstrider arrives in-system, deploying the Overlord-class DropShip TCS Leviathan, commanded by the veteran Space Master Vince Torio and packed with essential supplies for the Lancers. What follows is a series of encounters between the Acero and the Leviathan as the two officers fight a duel of wits and tactics, with Majikowski trying to prevent Torio delivering supplies essential to the Second Taurian Lancers before an AFFS force can arrive to recapture Bromhead.[1]

Ultimately, Majikowski is proved to be the superior - or luckier - tactician, and Torio is left with no choice but to negotiate with Majikowski over the future of the Leviathan.[1]
