Description

Originally built in 2492, the Griffin has seen classification as an assault, heavy, and finally medium 'Mech. Because of its popularity with the militaries of the Inner Sphere, the design has seen production long past the point that most 'Mechs would be retired from service. Because of the Griffin's weapons payload, the design excels in direct fire support and sniper roles. Additionally, the Griffin has a great deal of maneuverability, with a maximum speed of 86.4 kph. A jumping distance of one hundred and fifty meters means the Griffin can keep up with most lighter 'Mechs and outmaneuver most heavier designs.

Armament

The primary weapon on the Griffin is a Fusigon PPC. The PPC allows the Griffin to work in a long-range fire sniper role. This is backed up by a Delta Dart LRM 10 launcher. The LRM launcher gives the Griffin some indirect fire support capabilities. The Achilles heel of the design is its lack of short-range weapons, for when an enemy is capable of closing ranges and engaging in close quarters combat.

Variants

  • GRF-1DS - The 1DS variant makes the Griffin more of a fire support 'Mech. The engine has been upgraded to an extralight engine and the weapons have been stripped from the chassis. The 'Mech now carries a LRM 20 launcher which makes it capable of fire support roles as well as a Large Pulse Laser for close range combat. BV (1.0) = 1,202, BV (2.0) = 1,285
  • GRF-1S - The 1S looks to rectify the lack of close range weapons by removing the PPC, in favor of a Large Laser and two Medium Lasers. To help manage the heat load, the 'Mech has had four additional heat sinks added to the design. BV (1.0) = 1,061, BV (2.0) = 1,253
  • GRF-3M - The 3M Griffin is an upgraded version of the design that seeks to enhance its long-range capabilities. The engine has been exchanged for an extralight engine and the heat sinks for double heat sinks. The PPC has been replaced by an ER PPC, for longer reach, at the expense of more heat and the LRM launcher has been upgraded to an LRM 20 launcher, for more indirect fire support capabilities. BV (1.0) = 1,440, BV (2.0) = 1,521
  • GRF-6CS - Probably one of the most advanced variants of the Griffin, the 6CS is built using an Endo Steel frame and is powered by an extralight engine. The weight saved has gone into radically upgrading the Griffins armament. The 'Mech's primary weapons are an ER PPC and a LRM 15 launcher linked to an Artemis IV fire control system. The 6CS carries two ER Medium Lasers for short range engagements, and has an advanced electronics warfare suite, consisting of a Guardian ECM Suite and an advanced C3i computer, to allow it to share targeting telemetry with friendly units. BV (1.0) = 1,469, BV (2.0) = 1,695
  • GRF-6S - Similar to the 6CS, the 6S is also built using an Endo Steel chassis, but uses a Light Fusion Engine for power. This allows the 6S model to carry an ER PPC, LRM 15 with Artemis IV, and two ER Medium Lasers as weapons, just like the 6CS. The 'Mech also has twelve tons of armor protection, which allows it to withstand most attacks. BV (1.0) = 1,461, BV (2.0) = 1,781
  • Griffin IIC - The Griffin was one of the 'Mechs taken on the Exodus by the SLDF, following the collapse of the Star League. Eventually, the model was redesigned to use exclusively Clan technology and the Griffin IIC was created. BV (1.0) = 1,492, BV (2.0) = 1,608
