::::Anyway… it appears #REDIRECT is even more special than I thought before, that I got meta.mediawiki.org and mediawiki.org mixed up, that there's no way to get a canonical answer to whether it's a magic word or not… but #REDIRECT ''isn't'' a tag, and that overall this was a gigantic waste of my time even by my loose definition. --[[User:Xoid|Xoid]] 19:29, 19 July 2009 (UTC)

Terminology differentiation[edit]

Tags generally refer to the HTML-esque things, like <nowiki></nowiki> or <noinclude></noinclude>. Most of this stuff should be in a page like Help:Commonly used templates. Help:Templates should be reserved for a page that is full of the basics of template usage. --Xoid 04:36, 2 February 2007 (CST)

You are suggesting we move Help:Tags to Help:Commonly used templates, right? If so, I concur. --Revanche (admin) 11:23, 3 February 2007 (CST)
Well, most of it. The #REDIRECT stuff is one of those weird ones that isn't a template, isn't a HTML-esque tag. According to mw:Help:Magic words it's, er, a magic word. Like __TOC__ and {{PAGENAME}}, for example. (I do believe I'm rambling. Anyway, moved.) --Xoid 18:13, 3 February 2007 (CST)
I just spent half an hour looking at MediaWiki's source code just to make sure I would be correct if I substituted the word "tag" for "magic word" in Help:CUT. (Got side-tracked when copyediting the page.)
Sure am doing something useful now, aren't I? To be fair it was spurred on by how mw:Help:Magic words didn't have an entry like I previously said. Cue half an hour of digging between revisions just to ensure that I was right, follow by another half an hour digging through source code.
Anyway… it appears #REDIRECT is even more special than I thought before, that I got meta.mediawiki.org and mediawiki.org mixed up, that there's no way to get a canonical answer to whether it's a magic word or not… but #REDIRECT isn't a tag, and that overall this was a gigantic waste of my time even by my loose definition. --Xoid 19:29, 19 July 2009 (UTC)
Aaah, yes. But sometimes its about the hunt itself, isn't it? --Revanche (talk|contribs) 21:57, 19 July 2009 (UTC)
