Pre-rollout Policy Discussion[edit]

Please start discussing here, if you have any concerns regarding this prospective policy. --Revanche (talk|contribs) 18:33, 9 July 2009 (UTC)

Once the kinks have been worked out just make it part of the Manual of Style. There's no real "policy" in this after all, just stylisation guidelines. --Xoid 00:15, 20 July 2009 (UTC)
Agree. It fits more into my procedures concept I had, following this post. --Revanche (talk|contribs) 00:28, 20 July 2009 (UTC)

ProtoMechs[edit]

The current version of the policy shows only that BattleMech, DropShips, JumpShips, WarShips and ASF class names are italicized. However, wondering if ProtoMechs should be, as well, I looked in Combat Equipment. In that book, Protos are italicized, while Battle Armor are not. As a proponent of the B-E-D method of consensus, I'm changing the policy here to match that title.--Revanche (talk|contribs) 04:22, 13 July 2009 (UTC)

WikiProject Ground Units addresses this. --Scaletail 22:57, 13 July 2009 (UTC)

Mission Change Proposal[edit]

I propose changing this from an uncompleted policy to a Help article, to be further cat'd under the Manual of Style. --Revanche (talk|contribs) 22:28, 5 January 2010 (UTC)

No apparent concerns regarding this move; assuming consensus and making the change. --Revanche (talk|contribs) 20:39, 10 January 2010 (UTC)

Suggested Additions[edit]

Can examples be added that show the proper italics for "named" and "numbered" variants? i.e. AS7-D Atlas Danielle, Black Hawk (Standard) 3, Marauder IIC, and Marauder II C. I don't know if I have the italics correct in these examples, but that is my best interpretation of the policy. Cache (talk) 11:04, 26 November 2014 (PST)

The "C" 'Mechs[edit]

"To indicate a specific BattleMech, OmniMech, aerospace fighter, DropShip, WarShip, and JumpShip designs, such as Dire Wolf, Avalon, and Shilone. Italics should also be used for specific names of vehicles of all types, such as Kerensky's Blues and Prometheus. ’Mech and aerospace fighter variant/configuration designations, such as AS7-K and STU-K15, are not italicized."

I've added the boldface emphasis because that's the part relevant to this question: Is the "C" in the Clan refits of Inner Sphere 'Mechs (as in Archer C, Rifleman C, Warhammer C, etc.) italicized?--Mbear(talk) 09:51, 1 July 2021 (EDT)

Good question! Thought about it a bit, and I think the answer is no. As you say they're variants, not different 'Mechs. Frabby (talk) 10:36, 1 July 2021 (EDT)
Agreed, the "C" should not be italicized because it is a variant designation. --Cache (talk) 12:11, 1 July 2021 (EDT)

Question about the limits of italics convention for non English words[edit]

Cribbed from policy: "(Italics should be used for) Non-English words, except those of Federated Suns or Lyran ranks"

Should the following terms be italicized, since they aren't English and they aren't Federated Suns/Lyran ranks?

Examples:

  • KungsArmé
  • Yakuza
  • Mafia
  • Tong
  • Mandrinn
  • Umayyad Caliphate ranks (probably arabic in origin)
  • Clan terms that are clearly not English in origin:
  • Khan (and its derivatives) (mongolian in origin)
  • Keshik (mongolian in origin)
  • ilChi

Also, "Kommandant" is a Lyran rank, so it's not supposed to be italicized, but it is italicized on Help:Italics, so I'm a bit confused.

EDIT: What about words that are non English in origin and NOT Lyran/Davion rank in origin, but are intended to be not italicized? (Like Kage battle armor). Which protocol takes precedence, the non English origin or its battle armor descriptor? Similar question with Hauptmann 'Mech, which protocol takes precedence?
