Planetary History

Inarcs had a most unusual founding when it was selected as a Star League penal colony world sight unseen, after a clerical error in the twenty-fourth century incorrectly classified the comfortable planet as uninhabitable. Exporting nearly 100,000 criminals to the world, the Star League soon returned to discover a thriving colony on the planet's hopelessly misnamed sole continent of Insel Desteufels ("Devil's Island") centered around their capital city of Utopia, the "condemned" prisoners setting up industries around extraction of mineral resources from the island chains of the planet's oceans.[1]

Shocked, the League chose to pardon the lucky "colonists" and the planet was opened up for off-world commerce, resulting in the arrival of industries largely from the Rim Worlds Republic. Inarcs effectively became a part of the Apollo Province of Republic and was conquered by the Lyran Commonwealth during the 2773-2775 Republic-Commonwealth war.[10] As part of the Lyran Commonwealth the planet came to support military manufacturers such as Blackstone Industries, the foundation of the wealthy Blackstone family and the Blackstone Highlanders mercenary unit.[1]

Inarcs was raided by the mercenaries-turned-pirate group known as the "Blades of Death" in May 3077; the pirate band struck at an Acrux Incorporated import warehouse located near the settlement of Oak Grove. The pirates managed to secure over 300 tons of loot from the warehouse, primarily nonperishable food, before they were driven off. Attacked initially by the Inarcs Militia, the resulting firefight damaged the nearby Oak Creek Power Relay Complex, disrupting power supplies to more than four million people on Inarcs for over a week and cost the Inarcs militia 6 vehicles and 2 BattleMechs, a substantial portion of their strength given that the total 'Mech complement of the militia was just 8 'Mechs. It was a massing of the Blackstone Highlanders that saw the Blades of Death finally retreat.[34]

The timing of the Blades of Death attack was striking; at the time of the attack, Special Adjunct Jill Wilson was serving as a consular mission on behalf of the Archon, meeting with Duchess Tamari LaRue, the leader of the Inarcs Archonette, over the Archon's concerns that the Duchess was building an excess of military forces on Inarcs above and beyond the needs of the Archonette. Reports in the Inarcs Press Daily speculated that the Duchess may have been involved in the pirate attack somehow.[34]

Blackstone BattleMechs Limited found itself in an invidious position in the wake of the Jihad; all of the production from their plant was going to the military of the Inarcs Archonette, which as late as 3081 was refusing to return to the government the executive powers which had been handed to it, prompting rumors of imminent military action as the Lyran government reasserted control.[35]

Following the completion of Operation SCOUR and the final end of hostilities with the Word of Blake, Archon Adam Steiner requested all the Archonettes return their powers to Tharkad. Duchess Tamari LaRue responded to this claiming she did not consider the threat over with little implication she would ever surrender her emergency powers. In response, on June 23rd 3083, Adam sent the 1st Royal Guards RCT and 2nd Bolan Guards LCT supported by the LAS Yggdrasil to strike Inarcs. The Second Bolan quickly secured the taskforce's drop zones and easily defeated local militia resistance while the 1st Royal advanced on Utopia, easily smashing the defending Blackstone Highlanders and capturing the Duchess.[36]

The Second Bolan Guards remained behind to secure Inarcs while the 1st Royal transported Duchess LaRue to trial on Tharkad, where she was found guilty and executed by lethal injection.[36]
