Joanna Dresari was a noble from the Federated Commonwealth world of Kentares IV. She was the daughter of Duke Eric Dresari and the younger sister of Ian Dresari.
When Duke Eric and his family were captured and executed by Lyran Alliance military forces led by Lord Marcus Roland, Joanna was rescued by Kentares militia officer Captain Damon Squire and went into hiding. Joanna organized a resistance cell that motivated the people of Kentares into rebelling against their Lyran oppressors, resulting in Roland declaring martial law and killing or arresting any Kentares citizen who dared to protest against Lyran rule. Ian eventually returned to Kentares and joined forces with Joanna and her supporters in waging a guerrilla war against Roland.
Ian made the fateful decision to capture a Kentares militia armory and was thus unable to prevent an injured Joanna from being captured by Roland's men. Joanna was quickly put on trial, convicted of treason against Archon Katherine and the Federated Commonwealth, and sentenced to death. She was executed by firing squad; footage of this grisly event was televised across the planet by a gleeful Roland.
Angered by Joanna's murder, a vengeful Ian recaptured the Dresari ducal palace and destroyed Roland's DropShip, preventing him from escaping the planet. Roland was swiftly caught and court-martialed for the murder of the entire Dresari family, false imprisonment and genocide of Kentares citizens and other war atrocities.
There is an alternate non-canon ending in which Ian instead of abandoning his sister saves her. Joanna is young and heals quickly from her injuries. Ian abdicates and Joanna Dresari becomes duchess of Kentares IV. Ian comes back in 3065 to rescue Joanna from a Kuritan attack but both lose the throne. It is however taken back after the Tenth Lyran Guards come to help. Ian promises to never leave Joanna anymore. Since this is a non-canon alternate version, the future is unknown, but seems to be relatively bright for the Dresari siblings and Kentares IV as a whole, based on what happens in the canon parallel universe at this time on Kentares.
