In the BattleTech universe with its strong and long-standing mercenary tradition, states and other employers will usually assign a Liaison Officer to contracted mercenary units to help integrate the unit into their military, but also to have a state representative on hand to watch over them and to have some level of control. Depending on the relationship between the unit and their employer, the liaison officer may be anything from a genuine helpful liaison to a supervisor, watchdog or spy, especially in combination with the company store ploy.

States

Capellan Confederation

In the Capellan Confederation, the responsibility for handling the day-to-day liaison with chartered mercenaries rests with the Ministry for the Military.[1]

Draconis Combine

Main article: Professional Soldiery Liaison

In the Draconis Combine, the military department responsible for contracting and integrating mercenary services is the Professional Soldiery Liaison (PSL).[2] Mercenaries are looked down upon and service with the PSL is generally regarded (by DCMS troops at least) as shameful, and unbecoming of a true warrior.[3]

Federated Suns

In the Federated Suns, Mercenary Liaison is an independent division within the Department of the Army and the Navy of the Armed Forces of the Federated Suns. The Director of Mercenary Liaison hires units and handles all relations with mercenaries.[4] The department was previously known as Department of Mercenary Relations, and originally formed as Department of Contractor Relations.[5]

Lyran Commonwealth

In the overly bureaucratic military of the Lyran Commonwealth (Lyran Alliance), the Mercenary Troops Liaison is only one of several liaison branches of the High Command. This office, replete with the military's most skilled negotiators and administrators, is responsible for hiring, assigning, and paying mercenary forces in Lyran employ.[6] As of 3010, the Commonwealth maintained an office of Mercenary Relations on Galatea, the Mercenary's Star.[7]
