MechWarrior 2: 31st Century Combat/Opening Cinematic
HQ: This is HQ to any available units. We have ‘Mechs down at Nav Gamma. Bravo Cadet reports four Summoners on site. Bandits are hostile. Repeat, bandits are hostile.
Alpha Assault: HQ, this is Alpha Assault. I'm on my way, bearing zero-two-five.
[Alpha Assault's Timber Wolf advances through an arid rocky landscape.]
Computer: ETA: Thirty-four seconds.
Bravo Cadet: Alpha Assault, this is Bravo Cadet, I’ve got bandits all over me! G-Get down here!
[Alpha Assault comes upon Bravo Cadet, limping slowly in a Timber Wolf.]
Alpha Assault: Sit tight Bravo Three, I’ve got visual.
Bravo Cadet: I've got hip actuator’s out! I've-targeting system’s damaged! I’m in bad shape.
Computer: Enemy detected.
Bravo Cadet: Behind me, two of 'em, beyond the rise!
[An enemy Summoner appears behind Bravo Cadet and jumps into the air.]
Alpha Assault: Roger, I’ve got 'em.
Computer: Targeting.
[Alpha Assault fires what appears to be two ER PPCs, blowing up the Summoner in mid-air.]
Bravo Cadet: It’s got a lock on me! It’s got a lock on--
[A missile salvo strikes Bravo Cadet from the side, destroying his 'Mech instantly.]
Computer: Targeting.
[Alpha Assault turns to the assailant, another Summoner, and begins to advance on it. His machine guns spark off all over the Summoner's armor, causing a critical hit to its right arm.]
Computer: Warning: ammunition levels critical.
[The Summoner ducks behind a rock, firing a parting shot as it does so to no obvious effect.]
Computer: Weapon depleted.
[Alpha Assault encounters the Summoner on the other side of the rock. He pulls the trigger several more times, but his weapons come up empty.]
HQ: Alpha Assault, this is HQ, what is your situation?
[The Summoner turns back around and blows away Alpha Assault at point-blank range.]
HQ: Alpha Assault, this is HQ, what is your situation?! Please comply!
Notes[edit]
- On YouTube.
- It is unclear whether the intended meaning of "bandit" here is as in pirate / outlaw (though this seems unlikely given the game's focus on the conflict between Clan Jade Falcon and Clan Wolf), or if it is based on the real-life brevity code for an enemy aircraft (vice BattleMech). If the latter, "bandits are hostile" is redundant, as the word "bandit" by itself already implies it is an enemy.
- Likewise, the word "repeat" is usually avoided for this purpose, as it is used to request that a fire mission (i.e. artillery fire) be repeated. "I say again, bandits..." would be closer to convention.
- The use of contractions is contrary to Clan custom.
- This scene was recreated in the apocryphal novel Katze unter Bären. In this recreation the "bandits" actually were outlaws, apparently remnants of Clan Mongoose.
