Description[edit]

Although technically a "mere" infantry carrier, the Nagumo is an impressively armed and armored DropShip for its size.

Recognizing the need for a modern infantry transport, DCMS officials approached a number of DropShip manufacturers in the Combine. While not their first choice, Hinsdale's bid was selected because more preferred manufacturers were busy with other DCMS projects. With rushed development leading to a series of mishaps and the loss of the prototype DCS Fukushu in early 3055, the project seemed doomed, but after a major redesign, the second prototype began trials in late 3056 and was quickly approved for production.

Ignoring its problematic birth, the Nagumo is an impressively armed and armored craft. The vessel mounts forty-three tons of armor, with almost a third covering the nose, the remainder divided evenly across the rest of the craft. Ironically the Nagumos only serious flaw is with the infantry bays, the whole reason for the class' existence. The design's lack of bottom-mounted transit drive means that the infantry bays fittings must be reconfigured whenever the craft leaves or enters a planet's gravity well, a lengthy and annoying process that takes several hours.

Armament[edit]

Carrying an above-average weapons array for an infantry carrier, the Nagumo has an AC/20 and Gauss rifle, an ER Large Laser backed up by three standard and one Medium Pulse Laser, with Artemis IV FCS enhanced LRM-20 and SRM-6 racks mounted in the nose, with an AC/5, an SRM-4 and an ER large laser and three standard mediums in supporting mounts in the leading edge of each wing. Even the back has not been neglected, with another AC/20, an SRM-4, and a standard large and medium laser combo installed aft, with similar laser mounts covering an LRM-15 and medium pulse laser in rear-facing bays in each wing.

Cargo[edit]

The Nagumo has a cargo capacity of 2,284 tons and can carry 12 infantry Platoons, a complete Battalion.
