The Pain system was home to at least one habitable world and (as of 3145) was located in the bandit kingdom known as the Rim Territories.[2][3] It was located approximately 538 light-years from Terra in the coreward/anti-spinward direction.

System Description

Pain is located near the Finmark and Lushun systems.[4][5]

System History

Originally named Dijonne, the Pain system was colonized at some point after the end of the Reunification War[1] and was incorporated into Finmark Province within the Rim Worlds Republic. During the Star League Era it was considered significant enough to have its location recorded by Inner Sphere nations.[6][4][5]

Dijonne vanished from maps during the Third Succession War, indicating that the system had been abandoned, depopulated, or simply rendered too insignificant to merit further recording.[7][8] Dijonne reappeared on maps as an independent system during the Clan Invasion era, with a new name - Pain.[9][10][11]

Planetary History

Dijonne was first surveyed by the Rim Worlds Republic during their early expansion. Despite the planet's Terran-like atmosphere and ecology, it was considered a marginal colony and would be passed over in favor of better prospects until after the Reunification War.[1] Though initially colonized solely to deny the nearby Lyran Commonwealth the chance to settle it first, the discovery of extensive mineral resources led to intensified efforts.[1] Though the planet survived the Amaris Civil War intact, the destruction of the Rim Worlds Republic by the 2773-2775 Republic-Commonwealth War left Dijonne isolated, leading it to join the Finmark Free Republic.[1]

Dijonne was conquered by the Lyran Commonwealth and was incorporated into the Coventry Province of the Protectorate of Donegal[22][23] in aftermath of their destruction of Finmark.[1] Lyran corporations and the state administration were permitted to systematically loot the planet.[1] During the First Succession War Dijonne resembled an armed camp, and during the Second Succession War the Lyrans simply abandoned the planet as it had by then been picked clean.[1] By the early thirtieth century, ComStar surveyors found only decaying cities and small communities of subsistence farmers on the planet. After verifying that the local HPG no longer functioned, they removed Dijonne from the map.[1]

Dijonne would remain isolated, only receiving the occasional LosTech prospector or pirate visitor, until the 3040s. In that decade, Hopper Morrison and his pirate band, Morrison's Extractors, arrived on the planet, seeking a new home due to increased Federated Commonwealth attention on their base of operations on Port Vail.[1] Morrison discovered that the local planetary government had survived, with the town of Bourgandia serving as their administrative center. The Extractors struck a deal with the local population, offering them protection in return for food, volunteer labor and information. Morrison renamed the planet Pain because it was "painfully dry", although some accounts suggest he simply could not spell Dijonne. The planets continents and moons were renamed accordingly.[1]

Pain prospered during the Clan Invasion.[1] The Extractors' raids were increasingly successful due to the Commonwealth's military being distracted, and while the arrival of refugees taxed the local infrastructure, they provided much needed skills and strengthened the civilian side of Pain's government. The discovery of exploitable minerals on the nearby world of Oporto also spurred the growth of legitimate trade, integrating Pain with its neighbors.[1] Although the Extractors were eventually functionally destroyed, another pirate group, the Black Harriers, had stepped into their shoes by 3067.[1] The refugee population only increased with the outbreak of the Jihad, putting Pain on the path to becoming the capital of a new Periphery state, the Rim Territories.[1]

Geography

Pain has four continents: Gehenna (formerly Cote-d'Ore), Hades (formerly Saone-et-Loire), Perdition (formerly Tonne), and Tartarus (formerly Nievre). Gehenna and Hades have temperate coasts and arid interiors, while the equatorial Perdition was primarily desert, with almost no surface water. The smallest continent, Tartarus, is arctic and dominated by mountains. The population mostly lives on Hades; Gehenna is sparsely populated while the other continents are almost totally abandoned.[1]

Planetary Locations

  • Bourgandia: the capital of the civilian government. Located on Hades[1]
  • Torture (formerly Auxerre): the original planetary capital, currently the capital of the Rim Territories; located on Hades[1]
  • The Grand Nexus: a series of canyons on Tartarus rumored to host a secret community, although the identity of the inhabitants (if the exist) varies in the telling[1]

Notes

  • It was confirmed that Dijonne and Pain were one and the same by the Catalyst Game Labs writing staff. (dead link) A transcript of the details is available on this article's Talk page.
