Power Packs are portable, standardized energy sources used to provide power for energy weapons and electronic devices in the 31st Century. They fulfill the need for a permanent power source where plugging into an electrical outlet is inconvenient or unavailable, although the packs themselves will eventually run dry and require recharging, either by plugging into the local power grid or a variety of recharger stations.[1][2]

Standard

Standard power packs come in several types depending on their role and are the cheapest, most readily available batteries within the Inner Sphere. The common Power Pack is typically the size of pistol's grip, making it easy to store. While it provides enough of a charge for most electronic devices it will be quickly drained after only a few shots from most energy weapons. Micro Power Packs are much smaller, roughly the size of a coin, making them ideal for hand-held devices; however they carry less charge and are more expensive than standard packs. A Satchel Battery meanwhile provides a greater charge than standard packs, but are the weight and size of a full canteen, requiring them to be attached to a belt or combat webbing. The largest of standard batteries are Military Power Packs, approximately the size of a backpack, which provide the greatest amount of charge.[1]

High-Capacity

High-Capacity (HC) batteries come in the same variety as standard power packs but are more expensive and provide one and a half times the charge of their more common counterparts.[1]

Quick-Charge

Quick-Charge batteries also come in the same variety as standard power packs, but can be recharged in half the time. The trade-off for this come in a more expensive battery which holds half the charge of its more common counterpart.[2]

Clan Power Packs

As is true in many technological areas the Clans have made tremendous advancements in the area of portable power supply. While their versions of the standard, micro, satchel and military power packs are the same size as standard Inner Sphere models, their use of advanced materials and zero-g construction methods means their packs weigh less and combine all the features of high-capacity and quick-charge batteries. Indeed Clan power packs are fully compatible with Inner Sphere equipment and weapons, and while the same is true with Clan gear only when their supply of Clan power packs is low will Clan warriors deign to use standard packs.[2]

Support PPC Power Pack

The Support PPC Power Pack is a specially-designed power pack built specifically to power the notoriously energy-hungry Support PPC. This power pack providing five times the charge of even a Clan military power pack though at a weight of 25 kilograms it is also five times as heavy. While designed specifically for this role the Support PPC Power Pack can be used to power any equipment which accepts standard packs, and with a simple field modification seven additional "outlets" can be attached to the pack to provide power for an entire squad's weaponry. Such modifications require sufficient technical skills and an inexpensive kit which includes five-meter long power cables for each user.[2]

Portable Power Unit

The Portable Power Unit is an high-powered battery pack commonly used aboard spaceships. Weighing in at two kilograms it is the same size and weight as a satchel battery, allowing it to be clipped to a belt or shoulder strap, but costs half as much. However the portable power unit uses primitive technology in its construction, resulting in a unit which contains less charge and recharging with half as much efficiency as a satchel battery.[2]
