Planetary History

Rochester features wide plains full of arable land and pristine oceans. Unfortunately the soil and water also contain a series of trace elements that combine in Terran lifeforms to form poison. The first settlers only discovered this after their crops and livestock began to die for no apparent reason. Once this discovery was made, the planet was abandoned.[1]

Star League Era

The Star League scientific community was able to develop a filtration system that could purge the soil and water of the trace elements. For the next few centuries, Rochester became a thriving colony. In addition to the crops and livestock they exported, pharmaceutical companies eagerly purchased the output of the filtration systems. This "Green Jelly Gold" (obviously) contained large amounts of trace elements. Though toxic when blended naturally, drug companies could extract the elements and use them to create new medications.[1]

First Succession War

After the fall of the Star League, Rochester was invaded during the first half of the major invasion into the Federated Suns launched by the Draconis Combine in May 2787.[13] The Kuritan troops destroyed the filtration systems and the crops and livestock began to die off rapidly. Though the inhabitants begged the Kuritans for aid, they refused to provide any. 52,000 people died in the resulting famine. This event, later known as the "Rochester Starvation", was second only to the Kentares Massacre in the amount of hate and anger it generated in the citizens of the Draconis March.[1]
