Rowan Avellar was the niece of Neil Avellar and an officer with the Eridani Light Horse.[2]

History[edit]

By 3029, Rowan Avellar was tenth in line to the throne of the Outworlds Alliance.[2] Avellar became the black sheep of the family because she wanted to be a MechWarrior. Her uncle Neil bought her a brand-new Merlin and let her start a career as a mercenary.[3]

She traveled to Galatea, the Mercenary Star, where her 'Mech made her a very popular recruit. She chose the most prestigious unit: the Eridani Light Horse. She was accepted and assigned to the Twenty-first Striker Regiment. She quickly made friends with Captain Cynthia Paulson and earned a good reputation. Her understanding of aerospace fighters—her brother and sisters were pilots—made her a hot commodity especially suited to coordinate 'Mech and air forces, showing great precision. The battalion commander took notice and wanted her in the command lance.[4]

She was with her regiment stationed on Kawich when the Eridanis were attacked by Capellan Confederation forces, including Warrior House Hiritsu. Avellar managed to down a Capellan Stinger with a lucky shot, and later dismounted to coordinate the air assaults, before returning to her 'Mech to retreat. When Colonel Charles Winston suffered a heart attack in the middle of the battle, he passed command to Cynthia, who passed it to Avellar while she assisted him. This gave de facto command of the Twenty-first to Avellar.[5]

After the Eridani victory, Avellar was congratulated by First Prince Hanse Davion himself, who had called her to New Avalon to thank her personally for her good work. He also offered her an Armed Forces of the Federated Suns leftenant's commission for any post she wanted.[6]

Appearance[edit]

Avellar was described as "barely 160 centimeters tall and almost forty-three kilograms soaking wet" with her head shaved on the sides, and had short red hair that was kept in three wide braids.[2]
