Planetary Info
Schedar was settled for its mineral resources. These minerals are key ingredients in semiconductors, and the harsh desert environment minimizes the incoming settlers. As a result the Federated Suns was able to jointly administer the planet with the Terran Hegemony, attracting new investments and stimulating the planet's economy. This was important because Schedar's lower atmosphere carries a fine mineral dust that can easily damage human lungs. As a result, the population has to constantly carry filter masks and other breathing equipment.[1]
Schedar served as a supply world for the SLDF's Second Army, particularly IX Corps. In addition, the Ninth Corps also used Schedar as its homeworld.[22]
The first Star League was in the middle of terraforming Schedar to remove the mineral dust when Stephan Amaris attacked. The Amaris Civil War obviously put a stop to the terraforming efforts, but the semiconductor industry lived on. Fortunately, the Rander family of the Hegemony had founded Rander Communications Equipment Incorporated, a company that produced military targeting and tracking systems, communications equipment, and electronic countermeasures equipment. A smaller division also produced consumer electronics on the planet's surface, but the majority of the factories for military production were located underground to avoid the worst of the environmental hazards.[1]
During the Jihad Schedar's population hid out in these cave systems, only leaving after the worst of the fighting was over.[1] The Word of Blake successfully conquered Schedar in September 3069 and incorporated it into the Word of Blake Protectorate.[16] AFFS forces landed on Schedar as well as the nearby worlds of Caselton and Mirach on the 2nd of December 3076 and attempted to liberate the world. The AFFS forces were unsupported by the allied coalition assembled by Devlin Stone, and the assaults were quickly slowed by the defending forces; it was reported that the assault was planned and launched by rogue elements within the AFFS command, explaining the lack of support from the coalition.[17][18] It was noted at the time that the battle for Schedar was particularly brutal; the mercenary unit Wilson's Hussars were wiped out completely attempting to blunt the advance of Word of Blake troops counterattacking the AFFS forces, although the sacrifice made by the Hussars gave the 2nd Federated Suns Armored Cavalry the opportunity needed to regroup and force the Blakists back.[23]
