Planetary Info

Schedar was settled for its mineral resources. These minerals are key ingredients in semiconductors, and the harsh desert environment minimizes the incoming settlers. As a result the Federated Suns was able to jointly administer the planet with the Terran Hegemony, attracting new investments and stimulating the planet's economy. This was important because Schedar's lower atmosphere carries a fine mineral dust that can easily damage human lungs. As a result, the population has to constantly carry filter masks and other breathing equipment.[1]

Planetary History

Star League

Schedar served as a supply world for the SLDF's Second Army, particularly IX Corps. In addition, the Ninth Corps also used Schedar as its homeworld.[63]

The first Star League was in the middle of terraforming Schedar to remove the mineral dust when Stephan Amaris attacked. The Amaris Civil War obviously put a stop to the terraforming efforts, but the semiconductor industry lived on. Fortunately, the Rander family of the Hegemony had founded Rander Communications Equipment Incorporated, a company that produced military targeting and tracking systems, communications equipment, and electronic countermeasures equipment. A smaller division also produced consumer electronics on the planet's surface, but the majority of the factories for military production were located underground to avoid the worst of the environmental hazards.[1]

In 2783 the Federated Suns annexed Schedar.[15]

First Succession War

In February 2788 First Prince John Davion launched Operation SOLAR SHIELD, a desperate plan to try and disrupt the invasion of the Federated Suns launched by the Draconis Combine in May 2787. Prince John had been preparing to invade the Capellan Confederation when news of the Combine invasion reached him, and the forces he drew together for SOLAR SHIELD were based on those three 'Mech regiments nearby earmarked for the abortive invasion of the Confederation plus some six assorted regiments of armor and infantry provided by regional militias within the Marlette Combat Region. Prince John divided his forces into three groups and launched strikes at three occupied worlds on the Terran flank of the invasion, hoping to disrupt the thrust being lead personally by Coordinator Minoru Kurita.[17][64]

SOLAR SHIELD proved to be flawed from the outset; the units assembled lacked time to train together, Prince John's forces were limited in number, and he had only a handful of WarShips available to use to escort his forces. Senior officers advised against the operation, but Prince John felt that speed was of the essence, and ordered that the operation go ahead. Schedar was one of the worlds targeted by SOLAR SHIELD, and in May 2788 the Twenty-eighth Avalon Hussars jumped into the system, accompanied by supporting conventional forces and escorted by the Vincent-class corvette FSS Robespierre and the Carrack-class transport FSS Liverpool. With complete aerospace superiority in the system and ample warning of the Hussars' arrival, the DCMS forces in the system were well-prepared to resist the attack, and able to call on WarShip support to boost their defenses. While the Vincent-class corvette DCS Kaiten tied up the Robespierre, the Lola I-class destroyers DCS Minekaze and DCS Shiokaze ignored the Liverpool and attacked the Hussars transports, destroying them one at a time; while a swarm of aerospace fighters destroyed the Liverpool, the two Lolas destroyed so many of the Hussars transports that just two companies of Hussars managed to reach the ground, where the DCMS troops were dug in and waiting. Combined with heavy defeats on Cartago and Elbar as well, SOLAR SHIELD was an abject failure that cost the AFFS men and resources it couldn't afford to lose.[17][64]

Jihad

During the Jihad Schedar's population hid out in cave systems, only leaving after the worst of the fighting was over.[1] The Word of Blake successfully conquered Schedar in September 3069 and incorporated it into the Word of Blake Protectorate.[51] AFFS forces landed on Schedar as well as the nearby worlds of Caselton and Mirach on the 2nd of December 3076 and attempted to liberate the world. The AFFS forces were unsupported by the allied coalition assembled by Devlin Stone, and the assaults were quickly slowed by the defending forces; it was reported that the assault was planned and launched by rogue elements within the AFFS command, explaining the lack of support from the coalition.[53][54] It was noted at the time that the battle for Schedar was particularly brutal; the mercenary unit Wilson's Hussars were wiped out completely attempting to blunt the advance of Word of Blake troops counterattacking the AFFS forces, although the sacrifice made by the Hussars gave the 2nd Federated Suns Armored Cavalry the opportunity needed to regroup and force the Blakists back.[65]
