Plot summary[edit]
On Drask's Den in the Oberon Confederation, a combat landing by the unknown "Clan Wolf" prompts the local defenders to meet the attackers in the Jallington Vale south of the capital. Confident that they are the "big fish in the periphery pond", the Oberon troops quickly find they have underestimated Clan Wolf. Aerospace fighters (referred to as aircraft) thin out the defenders' lines even before the opposing ground forces make contact. The following skirmish is brief, brutal and very lopsided. Only Grasshopper pilot Lieutenant Arnold Hoefer manages to make a somewhat positive impression on the Clan warriors, and in the end his life is spared and he is taken captive by Clan Wolf MechWarrior Vaclav.
