Planetary History

Third Succession War

Susquehanna had become one of the centers of the old Scandinavian culture from the old Rasalhague Republic, as Rasalhague and Radstadt are both too overrun with Kurita operatives. In 3023 Kurita troops were sent in to break up a Leif Erickson Day celebration sponsored by the Sons of Knute and the Chrysanthemum Cross-Cultural Appreciation Society. This was done without notifying Prefect Cory Andrews, causing him to suffer the discontent of the locals.[42]

In 3024, Helmar Valasek, one of the most notorious Periphery pirates of the 31st century, launched a raid on Susquehanna. Though Susquehanna is usually a temperate place, as luck would have it, the worst storm in three years was raging around the South Central Oat and Rice Granary when Valasek's DropShips landed. The Kuritan defenders were Atlases and Warhammers, but Valasek's light 'Mechs used the weather to their advantage by concentrating fire on the heavier 'Mechs' knees after the enemy heavy 'Mechs got stuck in the mud. Once the heavy defending 'Mechs were immobilized, it was a simple matter of staying out of range while units from the aerospace contingent loaded the grain onto the pirate DropShip.[43]

Clan Invasion

Susquehanna was the first target for the Ghost Bear's Beta Galaxy during the second wave of Operation REVIVAL in May 3050, the Clan invasion of the Inner Sphere; Susquehanna was defended by a mercenary BattleMech company named the Regal Death with support from two battalions of heavy armor, and to capture the planet the Fourteenth Battle Cluster deployed a single Trinary, the Ninety-sixth Battle. The Ninety-sixth arrived at the agreed location to find no sign of their opponents; based on the conduct of a mercenary unit named the Black Omen during the first wave of the invasion, the Ninety-sixth expected to find no sign of their opposition but began hunting for them anyway. Unfortunately the Trinary's Bravo Battle Star walked into an ambush[44] in the Vernaw Woods: three of their number were destroyed by booby-traps, while the mercenaries from their prepared fighting positions destroyed and seriously damaged the other two. The other two Stars arrived in time to save the last survivor of Bravo Star, attacking the mercenaries with such ferocity at Vernaw Woods and again at Silver Lake that every member of the Regal Death was killed. Many within the Ghost Bears were appalled with the conduct of the Regal Death, and a substantial number declared mercenaries to be dezgra, leading to mercenary units often failing to receive a batchall and few mercenary soldiers being taken as bondsmen.[45]
