Deletion

I am the one who tagged this for Deletion, based on two factors: 1, it was an Orphan, 2, it existed primarily to present Rules Text, which for reasons discussed in Project GameRules we are trying to eliminate from the Wiki. Echo Mirage has since edited the page to include links to related items. I still feel that we need to remove the rules text entirely, but that is a separate issue. I am now NEUTRAL on deletion for this page, and I ask that we discuss and seek consensus: is this a page we want to keep and turn into something useful, or should it just be deleted?--Talvin (talk) 20:13, 5 May 2022 (EDT)

Given that we seem to have an existing consensus about the rules issue and the problems it could create, I have gone ahead and removed that part of the page. --Talvin (talk) 20:40, 5 May 2022 (EDT)
Ok, we can leave out the rules section for the time being pending further discussion. Echo Mirage (talk) 20:50, 5 May 2022 (EDT)
That discussion already took place in the Project GameRules page I linked above. We are slowly but surely removing many of the rules sections from the Wiki because the potential problems are just too big. The question is: keep this page or no?--Talvin (talk) 20:53, 5 May 2022 (EDT)
I should amend: much of the discussion also took place in Discord. But, as I understand it, there is a strong consensus that having the rules texts competes with the IP holder's rights to an extent that places the Wiki at risk. We cannot duplicate rules on the Wiki, you gotta buy the book for that.--Talvin (talk) 20:57, 5 May 2022 (EDT)
I'm not sure if I would agree with you there. If you were just talking about preventing brand new, fresh off the presses material being immediately posted willy nilly on The Wiki unedited without any regard as to copyright or fair use restrictions that might be one thing. But if I have understood your position correctly, you wish to conduct what would be in effect a full scale purge of any and all rules related material, including special rules and game stats, on the BattleTechWiki, along with much of the in-depth lore? Among other things, this Wiki serves as a quick and handy reference for gamemasters, players, and BattleTech fans in general on both gameplay issues and the in-game universe at large, not least for those who may not have ready (if any) access to older published sources. Not to mention that quite a bit of the material you want to nuke isn't really available elsewhere anymore. Some of it was originally released as free supplements, errata sheets, special event scenarios, and the like, while other parts were released many moons ago in long out of print novels, short story anthologies, etc. And that's not even taking into account any stuff from currently non-canonical or semi-canonical sources such as the old BattleTechnology magazine, which fans might want to use for casual nostalgic gaming using old game systems, or to aid in the creation of rulesets and/or scenarios for custom experimental games, to give a couple of examples.
I fear that you may end up creating far more trouble than you were hoping to head off at the pass. Echo Mirage (talk) 16:54, 8 May 2022 (EDT)
I'm not the person doing the purge, as you call it, for all I did remove *this* rules text. I suggest discussing your concerns with User:Dmon, he's one of the Admins here and has deleted far more than I of that sort. I'm just an editor like you, for all I have been here a little longer. .--Talvin (talk) 16:59, 8 May 2022 (EDT)
Sorry, I meant 'you' in the general sense in that last sentence, I should have been clearer there. I might take you up on your suggestion, but right now I'm headed for bed, too many late nights lately for once reason or the other. Good Night! Echo Mirage (talk) 19:33, 8 May 2022 (EDT)
I'm removing the deletion tag because the trend to delete seems to have bottomed out with the "offending" rules material's removal. For the record, I am opposed to deleting the article, simply on the basis of support for the the mission to "list all the things", especially as it relates to lore.--Revanche (talk|contribs) 13:16, 26 July 2022 (EDT)
