Talk:Götterdämmerung (disambiguation)

Spelling Gotterdammerung without the umlauts would be correctly termed omitting them, and not a misspelling. This is a long standing practice as typewriters did not have diacritics on the keys, so any words with them were spelled using the standard letter. With computers it is now usually possible to use a diacritic, if one memorizes how or looks it up on their word processing software, however it is still omission, not a misspelling. Misterming this makes it sound like the wiki writer missed a few days of high school English.— The preceding unsigned comment was posted by 24.208.217.74 (talkcontribs) .

It might be a matter of perspective. The person who wrote that sentence on the wiki happens to be german so to him it might be a misspelling. We will have to wait and see what he has to say on the matter.--Dmon (talk) 16:33, 17 January 2023 (EST)
I don’t think I agree with the reasoning that willfully omitting the diacritics means the omission isn’t wrong, even if it would be an accepted "alternative" spelling (not all alternatives are equally valid); and technically if you cannot produce the umlauts you are supposed to replace them by appending an "e" to the letter in question, ie. ö —-> oe.
But it certainly wasn’t my intention to blame any authors or editors. I'll see if the text can be amended. Frabby (talk) 02:19, 18 January 2023 (EST)
