::::Actually General, that's exactly what I meant. I'm fairly certain the reason Wikipedia uses CSS for most of it's templates (instead of templates that are made out of other templates) is due to their overloading the parser. While I do not see the BattleTechWiki ever getting to the same size as Wikipedia, I don't see Nic spending as much on new servers either. In essence; I'm trying to be as frugal with the amount of processing required as possible. We both know from experience exactly how crippling it can be to rely on multiple levels of transclusion; just look at how slow the UDWiki is at loading various pages. I have other concerns about relying on transclusion too much, but they're of a more technical nature. I will say that I don't see an issue with a template like that &mdash; as long as it is <code>SUBST:</code>ed in and never actually used. --[[User:Xoid|Xoid]] 19:16, 25 November 2006 (CST)

Reworking:[edit]

Project: BattleMechs This article is within the scope of the BattleMechs WikiProject, a collaborative effort to improve BattleTechWiki's coverage of BattleMechs. If you would like to participate, you can visit the project page, where you can join the project and see a list of open tasks.
  • Two things:
  1. Opinion?
  2. Should project templates all be like this? If so, I could either write a CSS class for them, or a template to use in the creation of these templates. I know the former is the norm on wikipedia, likely so there is less work for the parser to do. Probably faster too, come to think of it.

Response
  1.  ?
  2. I bow to your superior experience. I don't foresee building too many more of these type templates, but I think you're referring to how many times they may be called upon. --Revanche (admin) 22:51, 24 November 2006 (CST)
I don't think that's what he meant. On a note on these sorts of templates, how about a template with a couple of variables to allow the easy creations of templates looking like this? --The GeneralT 13:05, 25 November 2006 (CST)
Actually General, that's exactly what I meant. I will say that I don't see an issue with a template like that — as long as it is SUBST:ed in and never actually used. --Xoid 19:16, 25 November 2006 (CST)
Hmm, I do see what you mean. Anyway, Projecttemplate the template I whipped up earlier. The template call is nearly as long as the original template, but heh. --The GeneralT 02:27, 26 November 2006 (CST)
Hm? No opinion on whether it's prettier/uglier than a mule's butt/etc.? --Xoid 19:16, 25 November 2006 (CST)
Based on the template for templates (I'm probably massacering the terminology), I like it. It would actually be easier to build a new one, using this template, then experiment with various xhtml codes, as I did for this page. --Revanche (admin) 19:54, 26 November 2006 (CST)
