Description

Unbound is a adventure for the MechWarrior, Second Edition RPG and BattleTech, with the option of using the expanded rules of Solaris VII: The Game World set, set in the arenas of the Inner Sphere's dueling capital, Solaris VII. The player characters are hired by the Solaris government to investigate the unique and unusual technology used by the BattleMechs of the Deadly Sins Stable, quickly becoming involved in the stable members' escalating feud of their insane mentor, NAIS Professor Burke Kale, and the various efforts of agents from a NAIS Crisis Intervention Team, SAFE and ROM to capture or control the advanced and lethal technologies stolen from the NAIS labs.

Unbound was the first official publication from FASA to include what would later be referred to as optional Level 3 weapons and equipment.

From the back cover

The Clan invasion left the Successor States struggling to recover from the war that devastated the forces of the Inner Sphere. The Federated Commonwealth took heavy losses, and its misfortune was compounded by the untimely death of Hanse Davion. The alliance is in a precarious position. The New Avalon Institute of Science has been charged to find a technological edge with which House Davion may regain its lost power. Study of Clan technology sent research in bold new directions, and led to an extraordinary breakthrough in BattleTechnology.

Unfortunately, the Federated Commonwealth's salvation is in the hands of a madman.

Unbound is a roleplaying adventure set in the BattleTech universe of 3053 on the Game World of Solaris VII. The player characters become involved in a struggle for control of a radical new technology that could change the balance of power in the Inner Sphere. The adventure includes several new 'Mechs and a selection of new tech from one of New Avalon's top research and development teams.

Notes

  • The optional technology introduced in Unbound attracted a large degree mixed feeling among BattleTech players at the time and has far overshadowed the adventure itself. The DNI system was the lightning rod for the majority of disapproval, ironically going on to become the Vehicular Direct Neural Interface used by the Word of Blake's Manei Domini.
  • Curiously many of the new weapons were apparently created in-universe by a Dr. James Long, with many of them reappearing in the BattleTech Tactical Handbook written by real world James D. Long. Furthermore, The Pelican bar that crops up in this book would later reappear in Long's first BattleTech novel, Main Event.
