BattleTech Crowdfunding Projects: 2019

July: Clan Invasion Kickstarter

Hosted through the Kickstarter funding platform, the BattleTec: Clan Invasion campaign proposed to fund the 3D models and high-end tooling necessary to create redesigned models of the OmniMechs that originally debuted in Technical Readout: 3050, beginning with a star of five OmniMechs released as the core of the Clan Invasion box set, with additional options available as stretch goals.

The campaign featured a number of different levels of possible funding, with various rewards available, drawn from existing and new products. The names of the individual reward levels reflected ranks within the hierarchy of the Clans, as well asa number of other recogniseable terms from the BattleTech universe. The campaign was successful; compared to an initial target of $30,000 USD, the total funding raised was a grand total of $2,586,421 - more than eight times the minimum necessary. During the early period of the campaign, numerous stretch goals were actually exceeded before they could be posted to the website.

Physical Products

The primary component of the Physical Products received as rewards, in addition to the Clan Invasion Box Set (at the appropriate pledge levels) were the Star and Lance packs and the ComStar Level II packs. Each Star pack consists of five Clan OmniMechs; each Lance Pack consisted of four Inner Sphere BattleMechs, and was accompanied by an additional free Salvage Box. Lance Packs added as add-ons, rather than rewards, did not include a free Salvage Box. Each Comstar Level II pack consisted of six Star League era BattleMechs. Each Salvage Box contained one randomly-determined Clan OmniMech, so each reward consisted of five 'Mechs. Some reward levels offered "Double Forces" as a reward; this originally meant that the backer could choose a certain number of packs, and would receive 2 copies of each of their choices. One of the stretch goals unlocked during the campaign amended this, allowing for all of the eligible packs to be chosen individually - so a reward that originally offered two sets of 2 packs became 4 individual packs. The composition of a number of the packs changed during the campaign, as a result of feedback from backers. The following pledge levels received Star and Lance packs as a part of their reward:

  • Star Captain: 2 packs
  • Bloodnamed: 4 packs (originally 2 packs with "Double Forces")
  • Star Colonel: 12 packs (originally 5 packs with "Double Forces", increased to 6 packs by a subsequent stretch goal)
  • Galaxy Commander: 18 packs (originally 8 packs with "Double Forces", increased to 9 packs by a subsequent stretch goal)
  • Khan: 26 packs (originally 11 packs with "Double Forces", increased to 13 packs by a subsequent stretch goal)

Other Rewards

Individuals who backed at the Star Colonel level were eligible to submit a name for a character who would be canonised in some form in fiction and/or sourcebooks. The higher the level of the pledge, the more prominant the character would be; those who backed at Galaxy Commander and above were also offered the inclusion of custom artwork for their canon character. It was also possible to purchase the Galaxy Commander level canon character reward as a $200 USD add-on.

Those who backed at the Khan level were allowed to make several decisions relating to stretch goals, and were invited to attend a BattleTech strategy meeting at Origins, GenCon, or one of the online summits held by Catalyst, featuring the Catalyst leadership team and primary writers.

Those who backed at the Full Kerensky level received all the benefits of those who backed at Khan, plus the guarantee that their canon character would star in upcoming fiction, and copy of a free copy of everything produced for BattleTech in the two years following the Kickstarter campaign, including limited edition items. Furthermore, those backers at this level were invited to attend a three-day Catalyst excursion, accompanied by a friend, which included social events, gaming, and attendence at a high-level strategy summit; this offer came with a $500 USD stipend towards travel costs.

A special "What Would Victor Do?" live-stream event was also funded as a stretch goal, as well as a series of four-play Co-Op Missions within the upcoming MechWarrior 5 computer game staring Randall Bills, Brent Evans, Russ Bullock and a fourth, unnamed staff member. Another live-stream event was also funded, repeating the "Beard-Off" challenge between staff members from Catalyst and Harebrained Schemes.
