Okay, I'm feeling kind of dense. What do I do when there's a vandalised page, and the only entry is the vandalism? [[User:Kittle|Kittle]] 09:07, 29 October 2007 (CDT)

First off, welcome aboard. With your interest in 'Mechs, I hope you ran across Project BattleMechs. Feel free to sign up if you'd like. As to your question, I have no idea about the grammatically correct way to deal with acronyms, so I usually try not to (one LRM-15, etc.). When in doubt, I got with the method that sounds better, because, really, that's all a/an is about. As for BTech products, there are many websites you can order from if you'd like, including BattleCorps' BattleShop (www.battlecorps.com/catalog) and Dragon's Trove for some older stuff (www.dragonstrove.com). I don't know if you've done it already or not, but if you're looking for CBT players, sign up at www.commandohq.com and see if anybody is running anything. --Scaletail 09:52, 7 September 2007 (CDT)

Welcome! I'm glad you've joined us in our sometimes fanaticism. :) If you have questions about the early stuff (Fourth Succession War and earlier), let me know - I know most of that stuff pretty well (including the 'Mech designs). From 3030+, though, the rest of the gang is probably better able to answer your questions, but I'll try gamely. :)
In answer to your question on the new user page, the way to tell whether you should use "a" or "an" is to actually speak it aloud. If a word or acronym, like LRM, starts with a vowel-like sound (in this case "ell"), then "an" is correct. Otherwise, "a" would be used. Hope that helps with that.
I hope that helps! Bdevoe 16:12, 7 September 2007 (CDT)
Thanks for the advice. I thought that was how you'd work acronyms, but I just wanted to check before I ran around messing with all the articles.
In response to Scaletail's comment, I went to Command HQ but unfortunately there was only like three places running regular events in the whole UK and none of them were within 200 miles of me. Kittle 16:56, 7 September 2007 (CDT)
No problem. Glad I could help. :) I think that's Chicago Manual of Style, but I'll double-check when I get home. The joys of having gone to grad school. :) As for the CBT stuff, that's too bad. I haven't played in a while officially. Maybe next time I'm in the UK, I'll let you know and we can play. :) I warn you, though - it might be a while. Bdevoe 18:36, 7 September 2007 (CDT)
The other thing you may be forced into doing is converting your friends into playing. :) That's pretty much what happened with me - my friend had been playing in HS and then got me started in college. I converted several of my friends to playing it and it kinda snowballed from there. Good luck! Bdevoe 12:06, 18 September 2007 (CDT)

Vandalism

Given the rash of vandalism we're experiencing, is it possible to make it so you have to sign up to post? Whilst I doubt it would stop the vandal/s, it might slow them down a tad, and might give us something more concrete to block. --Kittle 01:43, 16 October 2007 (CDT)

I think it might be worthwhile. I've spent many an hour correcting vandalism (as has Scaletail). I'll post something on Nic's user page about it. Bdevoe 12:36, 16 October 2007 (CDT)
Btw - thanks for helping revert that vandalism! You're becoming a regular admin. ;) --Bdevoe 13:51, 16 October 2007 (CDT)
I don't think that it is fair to prevent all unregistered individuals from editing the site. Many of them have made real contributions, I myself made at least a hundred edits (I have obsessive compulsive disorder) before I registered, and I have never once vandalized an article on this wiki. I do believe that vandalism has gotten out of hand, and that we need to ban repeat offenders. — The preceding unsigned comment was posted by DragonoftheRust (talkcontribs) @ 14:11, 23 October 2007.
Odd. You've used both American and Proper English† spelling in the same sentence! ("Vandalized" and "vandalism" respectively.) Not something that I'd expect from someone with OCD. Er… I'll go get back on topic. I agree with you and coincidentally left a message to that effect sometime earlier today.
† …I'm only semi-serious 'bout that, BTW. I advocate using American spelling on this particular wiki due to a mixture of practicality, combined with my own laziness and a simple lack of motivation to proselytise the unwashed masses.‡
