Planetary Info

Early History

A contemporary of the nearby world of Liao, by 2202 Zurich was importing considerable quantities of cattle, sheep, thoroughbred horses and cattle from Liao, or, as it was known until the death of Elias Liao, Cynthiana.[2] As one of the worlds outside the boundary of the Terran Alliance following the Demarcation Declaration issued in 2240 Zurich became an independent world.[3] Between 2310 and 2320 Zurich was one of several worlds that all applied to Emile Liao for Protectorate status, after forces from Liao had successfully defended the world of Arboris when it seceded from the Capellan Hegemony. Zurich joined Emile Liao's nation at the same level as that enjoyed by Arboris, and helped bring about the rise of the Duchy of Liao, a realm that would survive intact until the formation of the Capellan Confederation.[6][4]

Succession Wars

Zurich was one of Maximilian Liao's favorite worlds. The planet's leaders took advantage of that by capitalizing on favored trade agreements and tax breaks they received. Though it lacks economic resources and strategic position, the presence of a Star League era DropShip with three unique BattleMechs aboard increased the tourist trade to the world.[1]

Zurich was conquered by the Federated Suns in the Fourth Succession War. It remained part of the Federated Commonwealth until the Word of Blake Jihad. Zurich was liberated by the CCAF in December 3077 according to the Capellan government, after a two-month military campaign. However, the publication Is This Freedom? distributed via the Zurich Underground presented a different picture, indicating that while the major military battles appeared to now be over with, Blakist agents were still active among the population. The article cited footage of Word of Blake BattleMechs attacking a Capellan garrison in the city of Kuanchan, as well as the deaths of hundreds of civilians when Blakist sympathizers took over the People's Justice Center and went on a killing spree before being rooted out by security forces.[28]

Operation Guerrero

Zurich was attacked in the CCAF's first wave of Operation Guerrero by the Zhanzeng de Guang; the defending militia didn't last long. The Zhanzeng de Guang overthrew the local Davion government,[29] but the planet eventually was retaken by pro-Davion forces.[30]
