Actually BT weapons can be used in space. There's even capital autocannons (very big versions of standard autocannons).

They can but only after modifications....

out and away from all that you have one major problem.... long toms are fired in a balistic tradjectory.... it would be next to impossible to manover the ship to hit anything especially with NO targeting system of any form.

The only targeting system that dropships have for the long tom is for use when the dropship is on the ground.

Yeah, that's correct. Long Toms use a high curved trajectory. I guess that means that a Long Tom to be used as artillery would require more tonnage and spotting unit sending targeting coordinates.

the problem is that you can't use a ballistic tradjectory in space.... the long tom aims one way and that's the way the shell would fly due to lack of gravity.

on the other hand ANY gravity at all will screw up the flight so you cant just aim, shoot and hope for the best.... it's just a waste of time and ammo.

1: The Trajectory of a Ballistic Shell in 0 Gravity would be perfectly "flat" arcing trajectory is in responce to gravity and the thickness of the atmosphere. the Dropships Targeting computers would be adequate to determining the trajectory that works (gravity goes a little out past the atmosphere in the game, IIRC Tactical Operations Manual has the rules).

2: Artillery Shells are SLOW, an artillery shell goes

8 BattleTech maps in the first 10 seconds (408 m/sec)
(7 in next turn {357 m/sec}, 6 in next turn {306 m/sec}, 5 in next turn {255 m/sec}, and final is only 4 {204 m/sec})
8 AeroTech 2 Atmospheric Combat Hexes in 10 Seconds
30 BattleTech maps in 50 seconds
30 AeroTech 2 Atmospheric Combat Hexes in 50 Seconds

this would then be 8 space hexes per turn... and it would maintain a velocity of 8 space hexes per 60 second turn if it was fired from outside the influence of gravity (and did not pass into or through gravity)

if it was fired inside the influence of gravity I do not believe that it would attain escape velocity with only the above stated velocities.

Using the new Vs large target rules in Tactical Operations... this makes the Long Tom into an extremely heavy 8 Space Hex Range Autocannon 20...

It is my opinion that all statements should be questioned, digested, disected, tasted, and then either spit out or adopted... RHIP is not a god given shield
