==Overview:==
The Beagle-class science ships were a mainstay of Star League exploration and
astronomical efforts. They stood out for their pair of OWL Telescope arrays
[1] on either side of the ship.

[1] http://www.eso.org/projects/owl/

The ships carry up to 500 researchers and support staff to the far reaches of
the galaxy. With a significant cargo capacity, they delivered chains of
free-floating HPGs to maintain communications with distant Star League
research bases, delivered those same bases, and carried parts to operate away
from base for extended periods.

==Capabilities:==
The Beagles are easily mistaken for civilian jumpships. They average a bare
50m diameter for most of their 1500m length, with a disk-like 250m crew
section at the bow (a mere 20m thick) and a 200m sphere at the stern. Most the
needle-like hull is occupied by the KF drive core and a shell of liquid
hydrogen reaction mass.

The triplet of docking collars is placed around the waist of the spherical
engineering section, where the cargo bays are located. The Beagles have a very
extensive automated manufactory in their engineering section. This
"pressurized repair facility" is capable of replacing any part on the ship -
even the fusion engines and KF core (large doors allow these components to be
extruded).

The defining feature of the Beagle are the OWL Telescopes. These started out
as the mirror arrays for the SLDF's "10000km (range) Naval Laser," but when
the project failed due to unconquerable mirror jitter and deformation under
combat maneuvering, the Star League was left with some truly awesome mirror
designs. Star League astronomers snapped up the designs.

While astronomy stalled after 2100 due to the introduction of the jumpship and
the ability to get CLOSE to astronomical objects, by the Star League era,
there was demand against for OverWhelming Large (OWL) Telescopes. Jumpships
could not get close to quasars a bajillion light-years away. They could,
however, maneuver to useful positions that avoided dust and gas clouds between
them and their targets. The OWL Telescopes were part of the solution; the
mobile Beagles was the other.

The two OWL telescopes on each Beagle consist of ten 100-meter diameter
mirrors in blisters along the spine of the ships. These giant mirror arrays
use optical interferometry to effectively form a telescope 1250m in diameter.
While much larger arrays have been formed with wider dispersed mirrors, none
have the light gathering area of a single OWL mirror, let alone ten of them. A
single (Star League-era) OWL mirror could've separated Jupiter from Sol at 100
light-years, and maybe spotted the Great Red Spot. Ten of them together had
100km resolution at 50 light-years, enough to map distant continents.

The Star League being the Star League, the two OWL Telescopes on the Beagles
(and the partial OWL on the bow) retained their original naval laser
function.

A platoon of marines was stationed on each Beagle to get scientists out of
trouble when they got stranded, overwhelmed by natural disasters, etc.

==Variants:==
The last 12 Beagles had the capacity to carry a dozen battlemechs (or
workmechs) after some awkward "first contact" incidents with Deep (deep, deep)
Periphery human colonies. Typically, one of the Beagle's dropships would
return dropped battlemechs to the Beagle.

==Deployment==
The Star League built 30 Beagles between 2652 and 2670; all had been
decommissioned by 2750, replaced by the larger and more capable
Constitution-class exploration ships (which boldly went where no man had gone
before).

wow... i like this one. the back story you came up with is really cool. i think i might use this design (or something like it) in my campagin.

Ships like this really need to be done up for the canon setting more then warships...really these and other common ships need to see the light of day.

I like it! Well done.
