What if? Those two simple words have been ingrained in the human psyche for as long as we can remember. What if I'd accepted the job, what if I hadn't been rejected by that girl. What if I'd pursued my dreams? We conjure alternate realities for ourselves each and every day, most favourable, some not.

Consider this for a moment; What if two simple events changed the outcome of the Second World War, and with that, life as we know it:

The first; Vice-Admiral Chuichi Nagumo, Commander of the Japanese fleet that attacked Pearl Harbour ordered his planes into the sky for a third sortie, raining down destruction on oil tanks and repair facilities. While enormous in cost, the additional damage from this third attack alone did not put the Pacific capabilities of the American fleet out of action. By sheer coincidence, reconnaissance fighters from the withdrawing Japanese fleet stumbled upon the American carrier group at sea, and the damage inflicted on the ships in that fierce engagement set the American war effort back by years.

The second is much more mundane. In the summer of 1942, an automobile failed to stop at a busy Washington intersection, and struck Brigadier General Leslie Groves, who had just been appointed military director of the Manhattan Project, killing him instantly. The loss of Groves' effective leadership meant that no Bomb fell on August 6th.

The year is 1949, and this World War has been over for a short two years. Old Europe, unable to sustain its empires, has shed its colonial holdings. The shattered economies of America and the Soviet Union, drained from an extensive and prolonged war with Japan, are incapable of exerting overt military pressure on the newly independent nations, freeing these new countries to pursue their own identities.

It is this world into which you emerge; Having recently won elections, your fledgling government is standing at the forefront, ready to lead the nation to glory ... or ruin.

Featuring:

Dynamic Country Management

Your country takes on a life of its own as you respond to issues which confront your government. Will you lead your people into a democratic future, or bind them to the wheels of a despotic regime? The identity of your nation will contort to reflect the actions your government takes. Manage your country successfully, maintaining popular support for the government, or your leadership abilities will be challenged in the next election.

Interact with International Corporations

This world is not an empty, sterile one; Multinational corporations interact with player countries, developing and supplying the weapons of war to combatants, harvesting mineral wealth from the ground, and fueling the growth of society with energy.

Command Realistic Armies

After buying units from your favourite multinational, assign them into divisions, and those divisions into armies. Command them all with independent orders which are carried out by your generals in real-time, using a multitude of different combat tactics to achieve victory against your opponents.

Rally Nations to Your Banner

Create grand alliances to project your power world-wide, or protect against those nations that would take advantage of you. Just like the real nations, you are not limited to membership in just one international institution. As leader, assign different ranks to member nations, and act as the mouthpiece of your alliance, but be aware that the actions you take will reflect both upon you, and on your organization.

Wage War Against Your Foes

Choose from a list of combat operations; conduct war-games against your allies to increase troop training, engage in punitive actions against aggressor nations, or capture foreign cities. Execute single stage maneuvers, or an extended campaign that will see your forces sweep across enemy territory capturing city after city.

No Artificial Limits

A unique tribute system ensures that you stay in the game even after you have been defeated on the plains of battle, giving your country a chance to rebuild under the protection of occupation forces, which means that there is no need for artificial restrictions to be placed on your actions.

Integrated Help System

Forget clumsy and hard to read manuals. The answers to your questions are found inside the game itself, and an open-source manual allows the community to easily contribute strategies and start-up guides.

Shattered Empires 2 is has begun free open alpha testing, and is looking for casual and serious players alike to help test functionality and implementation. Sign up today and lead your nation to glory!

My mistake, I'd been linked directly to the neveron forums and didn't see the off-topic forum. =)

As far as time use goes, it's not a very time intensive game at all. Orders are carried out in real time, and a quick 3-5 minute visit every now and then should keep your country running in tip-top shape.
