------------------------------------------------------------------------------ ==Overview:== The Heller is a powerful Star League-era Assault Mech designed to replace older designs such as the Banshee and the Stalker, but ironically it didn't survive the Succession Wars and the older designs outlived it. Attempts to resurrect this design have met with mixed results.
==Capabilities:== A design named in honour of the famous Gunslinger-Era pilot Oha Heller, it was designed to replace several older mech designs such as the Awesome, Banshee and the Stalker. in the SLDF. A minor scandal broke out when it was revealed that Heller's own granddaughter was part of the design team and that Heller's reputation hardly deserved such recognition.
It is also the first mech to mount a paired set of PPC's, until then they were always mounted separately as seen on the Marauder and Thug. Although it did create a localized heat spike in the arm the pairing was believed by some to have an unusual advantage by causing the beams to partially overlap, causing a much higher level of interference if hit by separate weapons, temporarily knocking out the sensors of the target, allowing the Heller to close in for the kill with its autocannon. Some also claimed that the convergence of the beams greatly increased damage, but those reports were never substantiated and were officially disclaimed as urban legends, though there are some mentions of minor temporary glitches in the electronics of older designs when hit in combat.
Even if a pair of PPC's were not enough, the Heller carried a fearsome AC/20 with four tons of ammo. A pair of medium lasers and a small laser added to the close range capability. An ECM suite provided extra protection for itself and its lance mates.
With a rugged 255 Strand engine, the Heller had an average speed for an assault mech of that period, while its 16 tons of armour, ample ammo supplies and energy weapons gave it a superior endurance.
==Battle History:== The Heller first appeared in 2752, and was issued to Dragoon regiments to replace their older designs.
After the Amaris coup the Heller was in great demand and changes were made to simplify production. As demand steadily rose quality standards slipped dangerously and many Hellers entered service with many construction flaws, the most lethal of all being the replacement of the excellent Buster Autocannon with the inferior Klashmassi X-21. After only a few shots the ammo could overheat and cook off inside the mech, leading to a catastrophic explosion. Although designers switched back to the Buster after the war, the Heller's reputation had suffered a killing blow. Most original production models left with Kerensky's exodus and most later models were simply scrapped for parts. The last few models had vanished from the battlefield by the time of the Second Succession War
==Variants:== Blueprints for the Heller were found in the recovered Star League core, but not one manufacturer was willing to produce what they regarded as a highly flawed design. By 3067 a pair of prototypes were built by Defiance industries, replacing the AC/20 with the Steiner favourite of the moment, the Heavy Gauss Rifle. Unfortunately the Heller was unable to mount such a huge weapon and after an unrelated accidental fire in one of the prototypes the Heller project was once again shelved.
The Clans still field a small number of Hellers in their garrison units and it appears that Clan Blood Spirit have upgraded their stock, replacing the twin PPC's with Large Pulse Lasers and the AC/20 with an LBX version.
==Notable 'Mechs & MechWarriors:== Captain Rudiger "Perfect" Hessen
Hessen is one of the mechwarriors which accompanied Generals Kerensky and DeChaviller as they stormed the Amaris palace. His Heller proved invaluable in silencing the pillboxes that guarded the Imperial Palace. Knocking them out with perfectly aimed shots of his PPC's and AC/20. A lieutenant at the time, he was promoted to captain. Hessen joined Kerensky exodus and was executed alongside all the officers stationed on the Prinz Eugen.

Nice, built in flaws and such do go a long way too adding character to the mech. Something that the newier canon mechs are really missing.
