Overview: The Inner Sphere has drooled over the Clan Dire Wolf Prime for a long, long time, even giving it the glorious name Great Death (Daishi). Scientists, techs, and school children from every corner of every nation of the Inner Sphere have futilely tried for decades to match the machine’s simple and deadly long-range design. Now in 3078, leveraging cutting edge autocannon technology from the Federated Suns and particle projection cannon technology from the Draconis Combine, CMCDesigns is proud to present the DWF-P1 Dire Wolf. This cutting edge mech, now available to the Combine through CMCD’s Philadelphia facility and the Suns through the its New Syrtis factory, at long last brings to the Inner Sphere a mech that rivals that mighty Clan monster.
Capabilities: Well, I suppose the overview's sales pitch is a bit of hyperbole. It can't match the range or damage of the real deal clan mech. Nevertheless, a fun knock-off. ER large lasers were just too hot and large lasers too boring; the SNPPC was a good compromise. I really wanted and LB-5x, but there wasn't enough space. So, the light AC-5 gets the nod. ER mediums were lighter and preform better than pulse lasers. I wanted a bigger LRM or MML too, but again weight and space prohibit.
What I think this will do that mimics the Dire Wolf Prime well is its firing groups. I haven tried it, but I think it overheats and recovers at the same rates. So 3ERL + 2 UAC5 +LRM10 comes out about the sames as 3SNPPC + 2LAC + LRM5. Lots of cool down options. And of course the redundancy if an arm is lost.
Anyway, see what you think.

Nice...killer close-quarters punch.
Damn I need to get some of the newer books sk I can study the new equipment. And HMPro so I can design with it lol

Yeah, it definately is better at short range - just can't match the Clan mech's range. BUT! no XL engine and one could play around with specialty ammo.
At risk of starting up the argument over SSW again...if you're willing to live without the official HMPro, its free and has the new equipment with all their data except game rules; and it only does mechs. www.solarisskunkwerks.com

Well, I'm using The Drawing Board...really comfortable to work with, but it doesn't have some of the newest equipment, and there are a couple details that it handles improperly. SSW is ok, but it has some issues as well...I noticed it never allocates more than 1 ton/JJ, even on a 100 ton 'Mech.
Picked up Total Warfare today, so at least I'm getting myself up to date on the most current rules. Will probably pick up Tech Manual soon too.

I think that was fixed over 5 versions ago.
Go for SSW 6.40. It's very stable and only lacks the real esoteric stuff (IS partial wings, WoR tech, ect.).
