Overview:
Inspired by designs such as the Fafnir, King Crab and the Stalker, Project "Big
Joe" was started during the Jihad, but due to complicatoins was not finished
until after the war. Intended as a heavy assault mech the Bonecrusher combines
hard-hitting main weaponry with a powerful suite of secondary weapons.

Capabilities:
After careful evaluation and review of combat records Wolfram, Bellinghausen,
Ragnarsson u. Stormowicz Military Enterprises Gmbh believed it had discovered a
fatal flaw in two of the most famous assult mechs ever designed; The King Crab
and the Fafnir. Both carried a pair of devastating weapons, but suffered from
inadequate range problems. The King Crab's Autocannons were only good at short
ranges, while the Fafnir's Heavy Gauss Rifles had a higher impact which dropped
off very quickly, reducing the firepower to the equivalent of a Warhammer, a
design 30 tons lighter.

By using the Thunderbolt launchers, the design team was able to extend the
Bonecrusher's range to nearly twice that of a King Crab. The use of an XL
engine and Endo-Composite skeleton freed up enough space to mount an impressive
arsenal, including twin SRM-6 launchers, two light PPC's and six ER Medium
Lasers, giving the Bonecrusher a versatile mix of weapons at different range
brackets. "It's like facing a pair of Atlas mechs in a single machine." As
the lead designer described the Bonecrusher.

The Bonecrusher does have anumber of flaws, despite mounting twelve double
strength heat sinks, the Bonecrusher could generate nearly three times that
amount of heat, requiring the pilot to pick weapons carefully. Though the
design team was confident that the various characteristics of the weapons would
guide the pilot into using the right weapons and keep heat management to a
minimum.

Observers have noted that though W.B.R u. R. ME had paid great attention in
trying to solve the problems of earlier designs, the Bonecrusher had developed
its own flaws, the Thunderbolt-20 launchers were vulnerable to Anti-Missile
systems and with only 9 reloads per weapon, it would lose nearly 45% of its
firepower potential in most protracted engagements. Others have pointed out
the lack of CASE as another weakness.

Battle History:
The Bonecrusher was extensively tested on the gladiator circuits, though the
downfall of Solaris meant that scattered venues around the Inner Sphere had to
be used.

In combat the Bonecrusher has performed adequately. The imposing, bulky look
of the Thunderbolt gun pods proved to be a powerful deterrent , causing pilots
unfamiliar with the weapon to keep their distance, only to find themselves in
the Thunderbolt-20's "sweet spot" and hit hard by a double impact.

The heavy armour and superior weapon mix have partially offset the limited
Thunderbolt ammo. Bonecrushers perform extremely well in built-up areas where
its arsenal can be brought to bear more effectively.

Deployment:
The Bonecrusher had some brisk sales on the gladiator circuit, and performed
quite well on the military market. The Lyran Commonwealth was among the first
to purchase the Bonecrusher in significant numbers, with the Capellan
Confederation a surprising second.

Variants:
The Bonecrusher 101B replaces the SRM6 with 4-shot models and adds CASE as well
as a single extra ton of ammo.

The Bonecrusher 201A makes more radical changes to the loadout, replacing the
Thunderbolt launchers with a pair of Gauss Rifles. The Light PPC's and SRM are
replaced by an ER PPC and an MRM10. A medium pulse laser guards the rear arc
from attack.
