Overview:
One of the first "modern" designs of the SLDF, the Harrier was an ambitious
design, intended as a heavy attack mech, the Harrier was overtaken by newer
designs such as the Thunderbolt and Griffin.

Capabilities:
A highly advanced design, the Harrier incorporated the latest in technology,
featuring a lighter engine, improved gyro and advanced armour than the
primitive systems seen in earlier mechs.

The original prototype had a top speed of 86 km/h, but the engine design proved
unreliable and required heavy shielding to avoid meltdown, the resulting weight
severely limited the armour protection of the Harrierand the much lighter and
more reliable 220 engine was selected instead.

This change proved critical as it still gave the Harrier good mobility and
freed up enough space to incorporate a potent armament suite composed of
paired large lasers, LRM5's and machine guns. Fifteen heat sinks gave pilots
the freedom to bring their firepower to bear and not worry too much about their
heat.

The armour was equally up to the task, with ten and half tons of plate, the
Harrier was expected to stand up to all but the most heavily armed foes.

Unfortunately the Harrier's success proved its downfall. As the orders flooded
in, the manufacturer Grimaldi Technologies was unable to increase production to
suitable levels. Newer designs such as the Thunderbolt and Guillotine proved
even more suitable and though Grimaldi was able to sort out production problems
in the end, it was too little too late. Another problem was that the cutting
edge technology made most parts incompatible with other manufacturers. As a
result running costs would sometimes exceed that of assault mechs such as the
Battlemaster or the Crockett.

By the second decade of the 26th century, the Harrier disappeared from front
line units and were transferred to militia units or sold to house units.
Despite improvements such as Endo Steel, double strength heat sinks and CASE,
the Harrier was no longer in service with the SLDF by 2625.

Grimaldi continued to produce mechs for house units, but in 2748, they received
a substantial contract from the Rim World's republic and produced Harriers for
their military until the factory was destroyed during the Civil War by SLDF
loyalists. A handful of Harriers ended up in the invasion force that attacked
Terra and the survivors, if any are believed to have accompanied Kerensky's
exodus.

Battle History:
The Harrier's combat record proved to be successful. The first units fought in
the closing engagements of the reunification war with distinction.

The Harrier fared less well during the Civil War, Rim Worlds pilot poor
training and the obsolete design meant that the Harrier suffered heavy losses
against Kerensky's troops.

Small numbers survived with Inner Sphere units into the Succession Wars and
performed with mixed success.

Deployment:
It is believed that less than two dozen Harriers survive to this day.

Variants:
A single Harrier has been modified with new technology. Replacing the heat
sinks with double strength ones, it replaces the large lasers with a pair of
snub-nosed PPCs, adds Artemis to the LRM's and CASE. Ferro Fibrous armour is
added to increase protection.
