Location: Byzantium Communications System: Neil 2000 Targeting & Tracking System: O/P 2000JSA ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ ==Overview:== M-1020 Death Sting Class Assault Gunboat was a project given life by the needs of the CAAF. With it's increased tempo of assaulting occupied planets as well as raids on pirate and other criminal groups the CAAF found that it need an equilivent of a space board helipoter style gunship.
After several years of talks with the different companies and several major distasters when attempts had been tried before hand, the CAAF was about to give up on the idea and go with a more mundane apporach of keeping a CAP on stand by during these operations when Acheron Industries LLC. unveiled their M-1020. The striking difference was they had a craft that work, it passed several test runs and soon has become a common sight on the spinward sector of the Co-Alliance.

I like the design, but could you reduce tonnage to 200 tons so it could be carried in a small craft bay without requiring use of a dropship boom? It would make it much less robust, but you could more easily transport it, I think.

Is it something that is based on a home planet/space station, or is it something that would be transported as part of an assault force?
Is the reason for the 400 tons to keep it within a certain speed/armor/weapon profile, or just for price?
I think the vehicle itself is awesome, but if you have it as part of an assault force that has to be transported as part of a jumpship cargo then you might have an inefficiency based on game rules...but if they are based in-system then I think you have the perfect ship...
So here are some questions based on the mission profile: What speed do you need for the mission? It looks like you are talking about landing zone-style support in normal operations, quick reaction force for space operations (beef up aerospace fighters or fill in as dropship escorts), and special operations/marine-style gunship. If so, I think the speed is perfect...fast enough to beat most dropships and not needing to have full assault dropship speed.
Is the weaponry adequate? Based on the mission profile you describe, I think that it is. If it were intended for extended operations or to go toe to toe against assault dropships/threaten warships, then I think it might not be adequate.
Is the armor adequate? I think your armor is more than adequate and might let the dropship actually battle at assault dropship level, but without all of the armament. If this craft were 25% the cost of a 2000 ton assault dropship then it is definitely worth it. It looks roughly twice as armored as the Avenger assault dropship at 30% of the Avenger's weight.
Are you making an Apache or a Hind-D? This seems like an Apache-style, but I think you might have just enough room with your tonnages to stuff its own marine complement on it at 400 tons...it could deliver the special ops team as well as support them as a helicopter gunship.
If you did decide to go to 200 tons then I think you could get your weight savings by taking off some of the armor and having the lighter engine. If that is not enough weight savings, you might want to keep the 400 tons.
Also, is this spheriod or aerodyne? Can it operate in atmosphere? Can it carry bombs and make straffing runs like an aerofighter?
Do you do graphics for any of these? I like the light dropships and small craft, but I think they are under represented in Battletech. After all, shouldn't a 400 ton assault craft be cheaper and easier to operate than a 4000 ton assault craft? So there should be more models of the 400 tonners, I think.

It's a DropShip (nothing else could be 400 tons) so, yes. (You'd need to invoke Strategic Operations' "quirk" rules to ban it from the atmosphere.) However, your other question (aerodyne vs spheroid) makes a huge difference in atmospheric maneuvering.

It's a DropShip so, no. (You'd need to invoke Strategic Operations' quirk rules to turn it into a limited bomber.)

If it proves to be an aerodyne, I think so. I've read a number of gripes about the futility of using expensive DropShips on strafing runs when a PSR induced by a single MG hit can make them crash.

DropShip costs are relatively insensitive to tonnage in a direct way. However, their x28 (Spheroid) and x36 (Aerodyne) cost multipliers mean that a DropShip that carries more equipment (i.e., more guns) will be see its price soar.

It is an aerodyne dropship, as for what it looks like I have several ideas that mix different looks together. As for gunship vs troop carrier with gunship role, that could be done as well variants and second takes do happen.

I was thinking it might be like the Achilles...side note, I think the dropships in the wiki need to be updated with quirks

If it proves to be an aerodyne, I think so. I've read a number of gripes about the futility of using expensive DropShips on strafing runs when a PSR induced by a single MG hit can make them crash. this is something that needs a serious rules revision...why would a weapon with a linear range of 3 hexes have the ability to reach out over a thousand meters to knock down an aircraft? It's not impossible, but it is so improbable that it shouldn't be a major concern for a dropship. A volley of LRMs would be a much greater threat.

I thought as much with engine sizes as well when I was reviewing the construction rules in the TechManual...why would they scale so linearly when smaller vehicles do not scale so linearly?
Thanks for the info!

Nope. Only rules in Total Warfare, and gear in Tech Manual listed as "tournament rules", is considered normal gameplay rules. Tactical Operations and Strategic Operations are strictly advanced/experimental rules.
